Very good film, not sure how close it is to Nostradamus' life but very very good, have watched it 4 times and still enjoy it, solid performances from the cast too.

Believable account of a prophet's life

The strength of this film is that it does not confine itself to an examination of Nostradamus as a visionary. Tcheky Karyo's portrayal is of a soft spoken man with ideas ahead of his time. He is seen as a man both pursuing and pursued by women, living under the yoke of the Spanish Inquisition, and fighting the plague with new ideas about medicine. Having planted a herbal preparation in the mouth of a plague victim he suggests to her "you have thousands of roses in your mouth, think of that!" Clearly a pioneer of the holistic approach!

The visionary aspect of Nostradamus' life figures significantly in the film, but not overwhelmingly. We see his visions of the end of the world, of the horrors of the Second World War, and various other insights into his, and our, future.

Rutger Hauer also appears in something of a cameo performance as a monk, wearing a hat which would doubtless today have the Health and Safety Inspectorate foaming at the mouth.

This is more of a drama than a melodrama, not pushing any agenda about the veracity of Nostradamus' visions. With a good performance by Tcheky Karyo, an interesting insight into both the visionary and the man.
