My sister introduced me to NCIS several years ago, when it was on Channel 5 when it was shown on a Friday evening and clashed with my teams home matches. I watched a couple of episodes and was hooked.

Due to the fact that I had missed several of the episodes I purchased the box set and though the programme is great entertainment I was disappointed by the fact that there were no extras on the box set. I decided to take a leap of faith and ordered and purchased the box set from Amazon in the USA.

It arrived and I crossed my fingers as I put it in the DVD player on my computer. It didn't play; it just asked me if I wanted to change my player's region code from 2 to 1 (it never offers me zero).

This refusal to play means that the set is a region 1 embedded DVD and only playable in region 1 areas such as the USA or for people who have a region 1 or region 0 enabled DVD player. Fortunately for us I have a portable DVD player which has turned into a universal player. So I breathed a sigh of relief and settled myself down for hours of non stop (except for disc changes, the call of nature and coffee and snack breaks).

I admit that had I known that it was a JAG spin off I probably wouldn't have tried it. I've tried JAG on several occasions since it started but have never been able to take to it. This series, however, is different.

The team of investigators is lead by Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon [[ASIN:B006546EVE Chicago Hope]]). I remember Mark Harmon in the hospital drama [[ASIN:B000EBFOSS St Elsewhere]] from when I was a child, he was so pretty, and he has become more handsome with age.

Michael Weatherly ("Eyes Only" in [[ASIN:B00007LZ6H Dark Angel]]) plays "Very" Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo.

Forensics are Dr Donald Mallard, aka "Ducky" (David "[[ASIN:B00337PPX4 The Man From Uncle]]" McCallum) the pathologist and Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) as the NCIS forensic scientist. Their boss is Director Tom Morrow (Alan Dale - anyone remember Jim Robinson from the early years of the Aussie soap Neighbours).

*** This next section may contain spoilers ***

The series consists of 23 episodes and opens with Yankee White where we are introduced to Presidential Security Agent Caitlin Todd (Sasha Alexander - [[ASIN:B005Y8F35K Rizzoli & Isles]]). Agent Todd replaced Agent Vivian Blackadder (Robyn Lively) from the [[ASIN:B0036QV8KQ JAG Season 8]] tester episodes Ice Queen and Meltdown (episodes 20 and 21).

I have never been able to take to Caitlin Todd as a character. She comes in to the team not from an investigation background but from a security detail background but by the end of episode 2 she is bossing DiNozzo about. In fact she is junior (would be a rookie trainee level member of the team) to DiNozzo. By the end of the series I started to wonder who was in charge of the team, and why anyone would allow that level of bullying from a person to another concerned me.

The episodes are:

Yankee White - when a sailor dies on board Air Force One there is a turf war between the FBI and NCIS for control of the investigation. The questions are: was this an attempt on the President; and is he now safe.

Hung Out to Dry - A marine dies during a parachute training exercise. It is up to Gibbs and his team to discover if this was it an accident, suicide or foul play.

Seadog - was a dead sailor really involved in drug dealing

Immortals - A sailor, who was believed to have gone AWOL, is found at the bottom of the sea by some divers. It seems that several of the sailors may have been involved in real-life battles based on a popular MMORPG video game.

Curse - the mummified remains of a sailor are found in an old jettisoned aircraft storage pod, without the money that he was believed to have stolen.

High Seas - when a member of an aircraft carrier flight deck crew is found naked in the ships freezer dosed up on methamphetamine Gibbs and the team are dispatched to discover what's going on.

Sub Rosa - after the murdered body of a submariner is found Gibbs and Kate Todd join the crew on board the submarine to investigate; while DiNozzo is left on dry land with an NCIS computer expert Timothy McGee (the introduction of Sean Murray - [[ASIN:B00004CYVZ Hocus Pocus]] - to the show).

Minimum Security - when a sailor's body is found along with smuggled emeralds the team is off to Cuba and Guantanamo Bay

Marine Down - Gibbs and co must find out how a dead man could be contacting his wife when he was killed on a CIA linked black-ops mission in Colombia.

Left for Dead - a woman escapes from a shallow grave and is unable to remember anything except that there is a bomb on a Navy ship.

Eye Spy - some men misuse a spy satellite to spy on female personnel sunbathing on a naval bases beach when they see someone running away from a dead body.

My Other Left Foot - the lower part of someone's left leg is discovered in a dumpster bin, the only identifying marks are a tattoo "Semper Fi", a sock, a boot and a titanium ankle joint, but who is he and how did he die.

One Shot, One Kill - a marine recruiter is killed by a sniper Gibbs and team must try and discover if it is terrorist linked or if there is another reason.

Good Samaritan - the body of naval dentist is found bound and gagged. Gibbs has a battle on his hands to prove that there is a serial killer on the loose.

Enigma - Gibbs former USMC commanding officer is suspected of stealing a large amount of money which he was transporting for the US Government. Gibbs doesn't believe it is true, even after the body of a marine is found in his cabin tortured to death.

Bete Noire - Ducky and his assistant, Gerald, are taken hostage by a terrorist who infiltrated NCIS in a body bag. Will anyone realise what's going on and can they be rescued before things become worse.

The Truth is Out There - during a party a body falls out of a ceiling. Gibbs and his team are called into investigate.

UnSEALeD - a former US Navy Seal convicted of murdering his wife escapes from prison claiming he is innocent and is on the trail of the real killer.

Dead Man Talking - an NCIS agent is killed while investigating a cold case, Gibbs and his team take up the investigation.

Missing - a Gunnery Sergeant disappears after telling a journalist that he might be the next of a group of friends to vanish. The investigation puts one of the team in grave danger.

Split Decision - When the body of a Marine Staff Sergeant is discovered by a group of children Gibbs and his team are taken down the path of weapons smuggling and militia groups. This episode introduces Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) into the NCIS family.

A Weak Link - a SEAL on a special training mission is killed when he falls while repelling with his team. Due to the nature of the operation they were training for Gibbs and the team are asked to look into the death.

Reveille - Gibbs is still searching for the unknown terrorist who held Ducky and his assistant Gerald hostage, before escaping when things take an unexpected turn.

EPISODE COMMENTARY: 'Yankee White' - Donald P. Bellisario

NCIS is a good detective series based around the US Navy and Marine Corpse. Please don't be put off by the military linkage as it is frequently done in the vaguest of ways.

On the region 1 release the soundtrack is English only and the subtitles are English and Spanish.

I'm not sorry I bought the season one box set (in fact I have sinced purchased several of the seasons), but I was fortunate enough to have a player that could play region 1 DVDs, if I hadn't I would have been very disappointed.

If you have a multi-region player and want to see the extras then I can recommend this box set.

There are no special features in this boxset.

NCIS is a good detective series based around the US Navy and Marine Corpse. Please don't be put off by the military linkage as it is frequently done in the vaguest of ways.

I'm not sorry I bought the season one box set (in fact I have sinced purchased several of the seasons), but I was very disappointed to discover that there were no extras, unlike the US Region 1 version which has a lot of extras. If you have a multi-region player and want to see the extras then I can recommend that box set. Otherwise you're stuck as a region 2 aka second class DVD purchaser.

The Man who gave us Quantum Leap can do no wrong in my eyes and he's scored another fantastic slam dunk with NCIS. I love this show! In fact, I love it so much, I think I may be addicted. I've never watched JAG - the series that spawned NCIS - so missed the episodes ('Ice Queen' Part 1 & 2)that became the pilot for the show, and introduced us to Special Agents LeRoy Jethro Gibbs, Anthony DiNozzo, Vivian Blackadder (yes, maybe in homage, but thankfully she didn't stay), Medical Examiner Donald 'Ducky'Mallard and Forensics Expert Abigail 'Abby' Scuito. In Season 1, Episode 1 we are introduced to Secret Service Agent Caitlin (Kate) Todd who becomes part of the team in episode 2, headhunted by the team's boss, Agent Gibbs. Later on we get introduced to Probationary Agent Timothy McGee, but only when the other leads have been firmly established.

The characters are all fully rounded by the time we meet them in Ep1 which is unusual for a new show, but I liked it.

Gibbs is the best, but worst boss in the history of Government/Civil Servants and comes from a USMC background, Tony plays the Lothario of the team and is an former Homicide Cop from Baltimore (though we find out he's been around a lot before that), Kate is ex-Secret Service and personifies brains and beauty on the team, Ducky (or 'Duck') as Gibbs calls him, is the ME, usually to be found up to his elbows in some poor soul as he talks to the dead and cares for his 96 year old mother who has Altziemers and has a plethora of stories from his long career, and Abby - the Goth we all want to work with - well, where do you start? She's a real sweetheart, who brooks no argument about her science, knows what to test and why, and always comes through.

The dynamic is very much a family one, Gibbs the father figure, Tony, Kate and Abby the children and Ducky the older brother to Gibbs. The Tony/Kate flirtation is played to perfection, as is the Kate/Gibbs undertone. The plots are full of twists and turns, you get enough lab/autopsy scenes to engage and not bore and you get to know and really engage with the leads. The chemistry between all the actors is completely believable, the teasing, the banter, the infighting, the politics, their individual back stories.

Like I say, I *love* this show, and am in withdrawal as Season 3 has just had a shock ending on the Fox Channel. Thank goodness Channel 5 has bought S1 (at least) and is airing it on a Saturday night. Watch it - love it! Join the ranks of fans gathered round their respective tvs and wonder at the brilliance of NCIS!!

As i found out later this is a spin off series, but its great achievement is disguising that fact from anyone unfamiliar with JAG. It stands on it's own with great storylines, actors and continual suspense. The hinge of the program is Mark Harmon's character Jethro, who heads up the team as an ex sniper and peculiar father figure to the younger member's. Cate, who joins at the beginning of the series, enables the writers to explain the intricacys of NAVY protocal to us as she learns from Jethro and Tony. She is a grounded character and with a background as bodyguard to the president very capable of handling herself, both with the criminals and tony's advances. Tony Denozzo, an established member of NCIS when the series begins has an enjoyable relationship with jethro, who is something of a mentor and disciplinarian, but stands on his own for his undisputed capability despite a somewhat juvenile sense of humor and pursuit of women. The Cast is also blessed with wonderful smaller characters- those who remain for the most part within the confines of NCIS headquarters- 'Ducky' Dr.Mallard, the NCIS coroner, who some may recognise from 'The Man From UNCLE' fame. Is wonderful, and to the credit of the show not completely a typical enlgish character, but one you find endearingly sweet and despite the grusome circumstances you usually encounter him in, a truly appealing character. The Other major character, is the goth lab technician Abby. Always amusing in her scenes, she brings life and humor to a job that has been portrayed in rather a dull light in the past. Tune in just for her outfits! :) As the series progressed i became more and more addicted, not in the most part to the crimes they had to solve- which are always fascinating- but as is the hallmark of any good crime show to the continuing appeal of the characters. Mark Harmon pulls the series together undoubtably, but each of the actors brings something new- a different generational perspective, a different national perspective, a humor and background that is unique in each of them, and makes for a thoroughly watchable and highly, highly recommended show. I'm waiting -not at all patiently- for the next series.

Over the last 6 years Television has entered a new era of greatness, and one country is the main reason for this. The United States of America. With the CSI series being big hits over here in the UK, along with the West Wing and 24 etc. Television has changed for the better. And this show is a result of how good tv shows are getting.

Yes it is a spin off series from JAG, but it is its own show and does not need its JAG older brother to prop itself up agaist. Its a fantastic show with great action and story lines and it also has humour unlike some tv dramas.

It has the science side of the CSI series and the action side of the 24 series all combined into one show making it possibly one of the best shows from the USA to date.

The characters in the show are strong and likeable, with Jethro Gibbs and ex marine officer, Tony DiNozzo an ex homicide detective, and Catlin Todd who was a body gurd for the president on air force one. Other characters who include the gothic lab technition Abby Sciuto, and Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard who has the grusome tasks of finding out how victims died. The great thing is you get an insight into them from early on so you can relate to them very easily. With no weak story lines, and good actors and actress's taking the lead in this show, you can expect many more series to come from it in the future no doubt, especially as series 2 and 3 have been shown in the States and the UK.

The show is remarkable, detailing the goings off of the Navel Criminal Investigative Service. There are murders to be solved, puzzles to be unlocked and chracters to love. The show has it all. You've done it again America, this box set is an excerlant buy!

The season one box-set is well worth its price-tag. While the dvd's lack in special features they are superbly well designed and packaged. Picture and audio quality is more than reasonable and the Surround sound feature is very nice indeed.

As for the episodes themselves, again totally excellent! The show carefully balances humour with danger all adding to the mystery theme. Will Gibbs ever catch up with his Béte Noire? Well, you find out in 23 and it is sure worth the 6 episode gap between the hostage taking and the plot to take out Marine One.

For parents wishing to give this DVD to their Children, you should have little worries. There is relatively little gore (compared with CSI ect.) however the one episode you would want to monitor for graphic imagery is #19 (Dead Man Talking). It is on one of the two disks that are certified 15.

Language is extremely mild with four letter words never being used once during the season.

All in all its a must have for everyone who likes JAG or NCIS or for those who just want some great entertainment!

I had heard others talking about it and had seen the occasional programme, but thought I ought to start from the beginning and work my way through. All starting to make a bit more sense, though in practice each episode pretty much stands on its own. A bit strange they make so called "Movies" out of a 2 part storyline, but otherwise NCIS is straight forward great entertainment. David McCallum was already into his 70s playing the ME, so obviously still ok for the film industry to allow men to grow "interesting" but the women to grow old and unemployed. Gotta love the science stuff and female actors that look like they can actually do the technical and self defence stuff they portray, so it feels pretty even (except the ridiculous female director character in later series). Off my soap box - watched Mark Harmon since his St Elsewhere days and still a solid performer with a lovely smile - he da man!
