Almost timeless

Repeatedly making it to lists of top movies ever made, especially in the American polls, this masterpiece conflicts the idealistic boy scout leader Jefferson Smith, "accidentally" nominated for a Congress seat, with the seasoned (and expectedly corrupt and eelish) politicians already in the House. Deputies of Jefferson Smith kind are now practically extinct, which makes the movie more dated now than ever. But the optimistic, idealistic take on politics, expertly directed by Frank Capra ("It Happened One Night", "It's a Wonderful Life"), still may win some viewers even today, as it did back then before WWII. None other American actor would be better cast as Jeff Smith than the "everyman" James Stewart, who was nominated for Academy Award for this role – nevertheless, the belated and deserved victory came one year later with the leading role (and a great one at that) in "The Philadelphia Story". Holding her own against Stewart in the leading female role is the ever-dependable Jean Arthur ("Shane", "The More the Merrier"), the supporting cast includes Claude Rains (in one of his most villainish roles).

Capitol, Capitol....

Except for the tell-tale cross-fade scene changes, this is a crisp and superb Blu-Ray transfer; rich blacks, and vibrant whites without DNR so slight grain and detail is retained. In my opinion, such a great 4K remastering so that you forget you are watching a film that is over 75 years old. Compared to the previous Columbia DVD pressings, this is a breath of fresh air.

To a few sceptics the film may be a little dated in some regards, but I prefer to think of it as a testament to a bygone age, a time capsule of its genesis. That said, corruption and manipulation are more relevant today than ever. Not only are the leads (Stewart, Arthur & Rains) a potent trio, but who cannot love Thomas Mitchell and his winning banter with Jean Arthur. One of Capra's best.

Thoroughly boring

I usually love courtroom dramas and this one was making a point, James Stewart is lovely and plays the part well but it just went on and on, I saw a film with Henry Fonda about 12 jury men who could not agree whether a guy was guilty or not guilty and it took place in one room !! now that was riveting superb acting and I certainly was'nt bored, however Mr Smith goes to washington was awful.

Blu ray? Buyer beware.

The special 'book' edition of the blu ray isn't cheap but surely it would be almost perfect? Worth every penny? Well, not really. The film,as we know,is top class. However, the restoration is not as wonderful as I was expecting. The picture quality varies from very good to okay but that's explained in the booklet. The sound is clear but the volume is set so very low you'll have to crank it up. All in all, considering the price,it's not a big enough step up from the dvd. 5 stars for the film, 4 for the blu ray.

I love this film. Jimmy Stewart is just fantastic and it's one of the great Frank Capra movies. It's beautifully shot and is both humorous and life affirming. In today's political climate it is is also highly relevent. HIghly recommended and don't miss out on other Capra movies

Just a brilliant movie. A wonderful expose of Washington corruption and graft and money influences politicians. A superb portrayal of naivety and the realization of how ones heroes have feet of clay by Jame Stewart.
One wonders if anything has really changed today?
