Even the friendly bouncy dog looks like its just stepped out of a pet food ad ...

This film is about as unrealistic as things get. Two people meet at an airport. One is getting married and one is going to a hospital to operate on a boy. The light aircraft they hire crashes in the middle of the snowy wilderness. Despite this being a survival movie, they never seem short of anything; fires are magically started, food is plenty and they both have a wardrobe of warm clothing to hand. Even the friendly bouncy dog looks like its just stepped out of a pet food ad despite being stuck in the wilderness for a few weeks. This plot has loads of holes in it and is highly improbable. Avoid.

What I hoped it wouldn't be.

If you are not aware of a synopsis then there are spoilers in this review.

I was disappointed to find that “The Mountain Between Us” was what I hoped it would not be – clichéd and predictable.

Ed Potton from “The Times” is quoted on the DVD cover saying “A great date movie”.

This is a well-made film generally, and to the director’s credit Hany Abu-Assad made the film in the mountains and not inside a computer (with a few exceptions where scenes necessitated the use of software) as he wanted the film to look convincing. The film looks good if you can manage to overlook some of the things that are portrayed badly. For example: Is one really meant to believe that half an aeroplane is not needed to continue to be able to fly at all? Ok I’m being picky – I know it’s poetic license.

Tens of millions of Dollars will have been spent on making this film, they’ve done an amazing job technically and then let it down with a bit of wood burning (or not burning as the case might be). Whilst it might be cheaper to burn a campfire using gas (and easier for continuity, and no smoke to worry about, and little danger of anything else catching fire) it doesn’t look like a campfire – it looks like a gas flame.

Ben and Alex consume minimal calories and are in freezing snowbound mountains where the chill-factor from any wind would make it even colder and make everything difficult to do (moving, talking, thinking even) and yet did they shiver at all, did we see their teeth chattering with the cold? Ok it’s poetic license again.

On the plus side, the cinematography is brilliant and the scenery looks amazing.

But as Ed Potton said – it’s a date movie.

Scenery more interesting than the film

I wanted to see this as I like Kate Winslet and Idris Edba as actors only felt a bit let down after the first 30 minutes of the film. I read other reviews first and thought I would try it for £2. I even felt the actual plane that crashed was a bit cheap looking. I think not much to tell; 2 people help each other out at the airport when their flights get delayed and they hire a small plane which crashes in the mountains somewhere. They have company of the pilots dog (does not get named) and have to survive and find their way to safety. Needless to say they then rescue each other, bicker, sleep together and as predicted end up falling for each other towards the end. It just missed something and I actually skipped the last half an hour as the talking got a bit mumbling sounding so I sighed and wished it would finish. I don't mind films like this but you could have had anyone really doing this, Kate and Idris should take this off their CV's!!

I had been wanting to watch this film for ages so I bought it on Amazon prime as I am a fan of Kate Winslet's films,This is a really good film that had me hooked from start to finish,I was hoping for a happy ending, and it ended how I had hoped, would of liked to of seen them get married at the end or see a bit more maybe of them as they made a lovely couple, and the cougar during the film, was a little bit computerised, but everything else was perfection, two brilliant actors and the dog was a good actor too.I highly reccomend this film.Very enjoyable.

Very warm heartening film

Loved this film but i really like Kate Winslet have not seen her in a bad film an excellent actress. A very warm moving human story set against rhe elements of the wilderness. Idris Elba played an excellent part opposite to Kate Winslet. Very warm heartening film that shiws that when all is said is done people are the same and have more in common with each other than not. If you like Kate Winslet then this id a film for you

Made a fool of myself

My wife had a few of her friends over to watch this one. Normally I don't like romantic drama, and had other things to do. But stuck around and was gradually pulled in to this movie. We all had a good time as the movie is intense and full of suspense. And the scenery is captivating.
Yes its cheesy and unlikely at times. And there is the predictableness given the familiar theme of an unlikely couple ending up in a romance.
Have it all with a beer and just enjoy the movie, excellent entertainment. We had a good time.

My wife's friends told me "its all right for a man to cry at the end".. might have made a fool of myself...

Action Movie or Romance? I'm not sure it quite knows.
Verified purchase
Kate and Idris get stuck on a mountain after a small plane crash. No-one knows they are there and survival looks unlikely unless they do something. As they spend time together we get to know a little more about their lives as they try and struggle down the mountain to find help. The relationship between them feels a little clunky and forced at times and of course, we have to sit through the argument and falling out part only to find that actually they do really like each other after all. Sigh!

I thought the start of this movie was much better than the end. The crash scene and the early scenes of being stranded in the mountains felt realistic and unsettling. Once it became more of a love story, I'm afraid I did lose a little interest. I'm not sure if it wanted to be an action movie or a romance.

But you know it filled a Monday night and was quite entertaining. I'd have felt quite upset had I rushed to the cinema and spent real money on this, but for £1.99 download on Amazon Prime video, it was fine.

I give this 3 stars at a stretch mainly because Elba and Winslet give it some class. But this is Mills & Boon stuff. Plane crash and scramble to survive for man, woman, pet dog and pet fire (it seems). No problem getting a blazing log fire going anywhere in the snowy wilderness -so that's one inconvenient survival issue put to bed. Speaking of going to bed they get down to it in sub zero temperatures - naked - eventually in the semi crushed shack with the blazing log burner in the background. This could have been far grittier and better but the path chosen was pure Channel 5 on Wednesday afternoon. Disappointing.
