Mother and Child

2 h 6 min2009X-Ray15
Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Kerry Washington, Jimmy Smits and Samuel L. Jackson star in a moving tale of three women and the power of the unbreakable bond between mother and child. Produced by Oscar winning filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez (Birdman), this powerful, pitch-perfect unmasks adoption and tarnishes time-honoured taboos in an often effortless conveyance of three women's stories. Beautiful!

powerful and moving

At first I wondered if this film would be worth watching as it starts in a sort of self destructive manner. But its such a good cast of actors that I thought it was worth sticking with it. I'm very glad I did. I found it a deeply moving and through provoking film. The realism and the sadness of so much of it, it struck me to the core of my soul. It made me think how glad I am my mother didn't put me up for adoption (because it could have happened) and how grateful I am that my parents are still here and that I have all the love in the world to surround me and the pain those people must carry in their souls. I just hope for those people who live this as a reality, that they get peace some where along the road.

Extremely depressing. Annette Benning is INCREDIBLE!

So I almost turned this movie off twice. Its not what I thought it would be from the title (a maternal, mother affirming film). It has a REALLY depressing tone, most of the characters are not likeable, there's much too much unnecessary sex and nudity and swearing and its just not a joy-inducing movie, until RIGHT at the very end. I will say that Annette Benning is SO incredibly gifted as an actress. She's just a dream! Kerri Washington was also good, although her character was very annoying but I can see how that was part of the story. It was also nice to see a young Britt (the blind girl in the film), why was really good as well, though her last name escapes me. Sammy L was also really likeable as was Tatyana Ali in a cameo as his daughter. I guess I ended up liking the film but I wouldn't recommend it as a feel good mom film. I almost feel like the title doesn't even fit the film. It doesn't necessarily show the endearing parts of being mother and child, more the heartbreak and difficult aspects of adoption. The woman who played the nun was also very very good. Anyway, watch if you want but be prepared for a heavy film and lots of inappropriate content.

How is film not more well known?

Very moving story line. A shame about the sex scenes. I think the story could have been conveyed without them. But very engaging and kept me guessing.

Human tragedy conveyed with exquisite finesse.

I can't understand how this film is not widely known or lauded. I am hard as nails but the acting is such that l was brought to tears. Such an amazing story of loss and yearning. The quality of acting is exemplary of the craft. A film that will last long in the mind and heart.

One of those rare moments that you are completely overwhelmed with joy of finding a film that you would carry it with you for the rest of your life. That's exactly how I find myself feeling after watching this beautiful film. Absolutely flawless in writing and direction. Superbly performed by all star cast. What can go wrong, eh? Naomi Watts and Annette Bening. Simply put, a perfect match.

Deeply powerful, like a rollercoaster of emotions was taken especially towards the end

This film was quite awesome and the storyline was beautiful.
The actors depicted a performance of eloquence which brought the sensitive topic/of film to life in a way that was heartwarming.
The twist towards the end was heartbreaking but the coming together and reuniting brought a tear to my eye.. worthy of a watch 🙂🙂

Appallingly boring, most bland and dull film

Very surprised this wasn't good because of the actors in it. Actor's of which I normally love and credit. But unfortunately, APPALLING, DULL and boring. Self indulgent character's.
