I purchased these shoes thinking of the quality Blisters Blisters Blisters I have wore off and on for about 6 weeks and every time blisters I walk about an hour a day I have to wait 4 days before I can wear again I would not recommend these shoes I wish I was able to return So uncomfortable Total waste of money

I bought this shoe for the famed 38 mile Timberline hike in Oregon which circles Mt. Hood. I saw many many good reviews here and trusted the Merrell brand. I got them a few days before the hike and wore them for two days to try to break them in (Yes, I know I should have allowed more time for this...). I noticed the ridge in the heel at the time as it placed some pressure on my foot, but I hoped it wouldn't be an issue. I also noticed that my feet felt a little cramped even though I had ordered a half-size larger than my normal (My big toe had plenty of room in front).
On the first day of the hike (Maybe 5 miles in), I noticed the telltale stinging in the back of my heel and pulled the shoes off to investigate. Sure enough, my left heel had already blistered and my right was also tender. The ridge where I assume the waterproof material is sewn in the middle of the heel is stiff and was rubbing horribly... Seems like a terrible design to me (See pics). With Moleskin and duct tape, i managed to keep going, but noticed the cramped feeling also became intolerable while descending. I tried with the laces loose and tight to see if either would help, but the pain continued (Uphill climbs were a great relief). Anyway, I managed to finish by staying up on the max dose of ibuprofen and by walking like an 90 year old man... (I had included pictures of my mangled post-hike feet in my first review attempt, but Amazon rejected them due to them being disturbing images)
I backpack every summer and have never had shoes hurt me this much (and this was a relatively tame hike). I usually use trail running or tennis shoes and will be returning to the same for future hikes... If I could return these after putting the full 38 miles on them I'd do it in a heartbeat. I would suggest maybe doing a short hard hike in these that doesn't get them too dirty so you can return them if they eat the back of your feet!!!

I have bought Merrells including the Moab Hiking Shoes for over 15 years and have noticed that the quality has been on a downward slide. The shoelaces on every pair I have purchased in the last 3 years has failed prematurely. The sole wear has accelerated. The shoe liner on this last pair has become misshaped and feels like I have gravel in the shoe. I noticed that most Merrell shoes are now made in Asia and only a very few in the US. Seems like another company using up their reputation to charge a higher price but offer lower quality,

I need to buy 1/2 size larger in Merrells. I take an 8 1/2 in every other shoe brand, but need to go with a 9 in Merrells. Merrells seem to fit my feet pretty well, but since everyone's feet are different, not sure how they will fit yours. This particular shoe, the Moab 2, could be a little narrower in the heel for my foot, but it's not overly loose so I don't think it will cause any problems.

The only reason I returned these was because I found something better for a lot more money. These were a bit snug but they seemed strong. Some people complain about the sole seeming stiff but I see it as a plus if you plan on hiking on rocky terrain where the bottom of your feet need protection.

Last week, I had to buy size 9 to still get the same fit. Held side by side, the size 9 is physically the same size as my old size 8.
