Theses have got to be one of the most comfortable make of shoes you can buy. I bought these to replace my last pair which I had for about 7 years which finally gave up this summer. Apart from a few slight changes the replacements are identical. As commented on by previous reviewers the front does have a neoprene type fabric inner which can feel a little tight and 'toe restricting' but to be honest on a good walk you totally forget that its their. The lining does function to keep the shoe in place and stops rubbing which could cause a blister. The sole is extremely supportive and provides brilliant grip whilst given a really good cushion for your feet.
The shoe is ideal for a multitude of activities.... whether walking on tarmac or over fields this shoe is ideal.
I have attached some pictures of my old pair of shoes so you can see how hard wearing they have been. Remember that I have used these shoes as my all purpose preferred footwear. The bit that eventually failed and forced a replacement was the elastic bits that connect to the heal support that have worn. I think this wear was down to driving.

These fail in several ways, when compared to my previous sandals (Emilo Luca) (and Ecco before that) which were inexpensive but superb. The toe straps, despite having both a quick-release contraption and a Velcro adjustable strap, are in fact not adjustable because of the thick elastic band underneath that keeps them tight - ridiculous! The side straps chafe uncomfortably already, and the soles are oddly wide at the front. Putting them on is not easy because they do not hold their shape but close up, so you have to hold the straps open (this is probably why they come with cardboard inserts to give them shape. The insoles are rubbery with an indented pattern so they stick as you try to put your foot in even with socks on (yes I wear socks - don't give me that nonsense about my fashion taste, I don't care). The indented pattern makes them feel as if I have sand trapped in them under my foot, and there is little shaping of them for comfort! My previous sandals could be slipped on without using my hands; the insoles were smooth and not rubbery, but shaped all round for a perfect fit (others have had shaped cork insoles that also worked well). Finally, I dislike the excessive depth of tread pattern - unless you intend trekking through snow or mud I doubt that you need tread at all, and it serves only to pick up clods of soil (or rabbit droppings in my heathland garden) that have to be scraped out. Flat soles; even the old crepe soles that some sandals used to have, are easy to wipe clean, more flexible, and not at all lacking in grip.

So far so good. I've only had these sandals for a couple of days, but have worn them around the house to see how my feet react to them, intending to return them if I had any problems. (I have suffered badly from rubbing and blisters from other quality brands). After about eight hours of wear I am very pleased - no redness at all- anywhere. The sandals are very comfortable, they fit well (I am a size 9 and I ordered a size 9) and are substantially made. I have seen negative comments about the neoprene insert around the toes which some say is too tight. For me this insert is soft and comfortable and works well, creating a flexible barrier between the skin of the toes and the hard outer shell, so preventing rubbing. The foot bed is very comfortable as well and I particularly like the wide strap which goes behind the heel, as this is an area where I have previously suffered blistering from a narrower strap. All in all I am very happy with the purchase.

Have worn Merrell's for trekking, hillwalking and everyday use for many years, so decided to give these Kahunas a try when looking for a robust pair of sandals for overseas holidays. They were everything I hoped for and wore them from new for 4 weeks straight. Extremely comfortable, hardwearing and supportive. Uppers are high quality leather and fully adjustable across toes, top of foot and heal for perfect fit. Vibram soles are excellent as you'd expect.
I normally take a size 10 shoe but like many other folk have had to buy a size larger for Merrells, However on reading the reviews on the Kahuna III before purchase, I decided to order my normal size 10 and they were a perfect fit.
Great shoes, happy to recommend them.
UPDATE: After many holidays, trips and treks, the soles of these Kahuna IIIs wore down, losing some of their tread. Time to replace them. Initially, thought I'd have to find another brand or style but delighted to find that Merrell still made the Kahuna IIIs so didn't hesitate to order a new pair. Size 10, perfect fit, same great quality. Very happy knowing these will last me a few years.

Despite being quite adjustable both across the top of the foot/toes and mid-way along the foot these sandals did rub on the top of my big toe. However a plaster soon resolved this.
These would suit someone with a wide foot well as the width can adjust to a very wide fit. As my foot is quite narrow, I had to cinch the straps almost as tight as they would go and I think this led to the issue above.
Not a deal breaker, just making other customers aware.
There is no denying these are well made with quality materials used in their construction and I think they look great (although my wife thought them a little old-fashioned, but there's no accounting for taste.
To my eye the taupe look much better than the black - I ordered both and returned the black as I didn't like the look of them nearly as much.
Would I buy again? Possibly, although the width is a slight issue for me. I'd probably rather buy something more suited to a narrower foot to begin with but I would recommend to anyone with a 'normal' or wider foot.
