Light and forthy but charming and evokes the 1920's perfectly.

Light and forthy but charming, Allen's script shows influences off Oscar Wilde and PG Woodhouse,Allen's direction and the cinemaphotography by Darius Khondji is immaculate. The sets and locations evoked the 1920's perfectly the interior scenes in Aunt Vanessa's house reminded me of the famous painting by Scottish Colourist painter F.B.C Cadell "The Orange Blind".
Special mention must go to Aileen Atkins as Aunt Vanessa, as always perfect, Emma stone was a good choice as Emma Baker, Colin Firth was as only Colin Firth can be and Simon McBurney put in a fine performance.
If you like classic cars you will the Alfa Romeo and the equally immaculate Ford Model A used by the hero.

Waste if a fine cast of actors!
Verified purchase
Given the cast this was a disappointing film. A lot of the dialogue sounded as though it was made up as it went along, there was an awkwardness - almost embarrassment at times - with the acting. As another reviewer has said, Woody Allen is so very hit and miss and this one was definitely one of his misses. Overall, I think the actors were let down by the script and the overall impression was one of the sixth form end of year productions. Sorry, but much of it made me very irritated at the wasted talents of a fine cast and beautiful surroundings!

Brilliant movie, funny classic story
Verified purchase
Brilliant movie, funny classic story, superbly directed, with excellent acting, Colin Firth as great as ever, Emma Stone with her funny ways to make us fall in love. This is a great classic movie produced in 2014. It could have been a black and white movie from the 40s. Same care for the dialogues and for every single detail. As a reviewer noted, there was not a lot of romanticism in the movie. It has a delicately detached classic movie or theater play feel not like a 21th century movie. It is a witty movie not a romantic one. What a great pleasure!

The real illusionist was the scriptwriter.

I seriously enjoy the performances of Colin Firth however, I found this particular visual rendition to be rather obtuse of the reality. The notion that these people would condescend to attempt to marry below their class was rather absurd, to say the least. It was enjoyable watching the true nature of the over-privileged with their condescending view of others and their over-blown sense of their own worth. I did enjoy the twist in the plot but not enough to rate the whole performance very highly.

I've just watched this film for the second time which was interesting because I was aware of the denouement. I found it great fun. Emma Stone was delightful and Colin Firth played his part so convincingly that I wanted to slap him. This is a very satisfying Woody Allen film. The period settings and costumes add to the magic of this film.

Enjoy most Woody Allen's movies and bonus of having my favourite actor Colin Firth in it. Has a few twists and turns to keep you guessing. Pleasant enjoyable fun.

I know we watched this & thought it OK but for the life of me I can't remember what happened in the end, so OK but forgettable.

A magic movie indeed!

Lovely characters and lovely story set in beautiful scenery - what more does one need! Very relaxing. Oh, but a lot of buffering over wireless to my TV which was annoying and I had to switch to another set with cabled connection. Don't think it was my systems fault as it has very good WiFi coverage and bandwidth.
