Read the Product Description Carefully - Part of the Dialogue is in Danish with English Subtitles
Verified purchase
The film is a really nice middle aged romance. Most of it is set in sunny Italy, other parts in Denmark. It's a co-production from various European countries, the director and the majority of the cast are Danish with the addition of Pierce Brosnan and a few other actors from English speaking countries. In keeping with the story involving nationals from different countries with their different languages, the film features dialogue in several languages, mainly Danish and English, with some Italian. Non-English dialogue is not dubbed but subtitled in English. Personally, I found the Danish dialogue charming (and I don't know any Danish myself) and didn't find the subtitles in any way irritating. This unusual audio/subtitle choice is clearly mentioned in the product description of the DVD and really shouldn't come as a surprise to buyers. If you want a film with all dialogue in English, stay away from this.

If you think you can live with a bit of Danish (or even better, enjoy it), this film has much to offer. While the Pierce Brosnan character is possibly a bit too handsome and rich and too good too ring quite true, there is much believable reality here too. It's not your average romcom, there is much in here about the various relationships within a family: mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, a stale marriage and dealing with the aftermath of breast cancer or the in laws after the death of a beloved partner. The acting is solid throughout, Brosnan is, of course, always watchable, but the real star here, at least for me, is Trine Dyrholm. She is sensational as Ida. Loved her and loved her character. The script is also very good, never allowing the story to become too saccharine. Lovely film for a quiet night in or a rainy afternoon.

A lovely, Danish, gem of a film

What a delightful film. I watch a lot of Danish drama and they have a very touching way with reality and dialogue, unlike so many Hollywood films which become cloyingly cliched. I bypassed this film several times, firstly, because it has such a poor title and, secondly, I am not a lover of the genre "rom-com". I would prefer to put this film in the reality catalogue. There are some funny parts, but only real-life funny, things we experience every day if you look carefully enough. It is well acted, understated and very touching in parts. Also, I love its honesty. What a very great pity that a reviewer gave it just two stars just because it is not in English but mainly in Danish, with only Pierce Brosnan speaking fully in English. It really goes unnoticed that you are reading subtitles as the dialogue and setting are so sumptuous and you always know what's going on. One of those films well worth investing a little time and effort into.

Don't let the rather stark beginning put you off! There is treasure to follow!

A modern story of families in trouble but with old-fashioned romance and beautiful scenery! There is a bitter-sweet quality about the film, but also a resilience that doesn't let the angst win out. Beneath the brashness there is a jewel to be found, if you like subtlety and gentle humour.

I admit this is the second time I have seen this film. The first time, I wasn't sure what to expect nor did I necessarily follow all that was happening; like others I found the Danish audio and English subtitles a bit confusing to begin with. This second opportunity to watch came unexpectedly through Prime, and having more of an idea what to expect meant I could enjoy more of the film, as I filled in the blanks and got more of the nuances. Maybe you won't need to see it twice like me to 'really get it', but it would be worth it. [Apparently Pierce Brosnan was speaking in English whilst most of the cast spoke in Danish, which made for some challenging acting scenes!]

An Almost Impossibly Romantic Film

A couple invite their families to their wedding (in beautiful Italy). What could go wrong?! Yes, the film is a mixture of English and Danish (with subtitles) - it does require you to concentrate - I'm old and a bit doddery, but I managed fine. The leads were very good, it looked fabulous and was moving in places. If you are looking for a romantic film with some funny bits, you might enjoy it.

All you need is subtitles

Perhaps I should have read all reviews before ordering. The "box" clearly states English Subtitles - which it does have every half an hour or so! The film is Italian, it is also in parts what could be Danish and sometimes in English or so I gather because I am totally deaf (hearing impaired ) so need English subtitles ALL THE FILM. The film does not have English subtitles. From what I saw the film is also rubbish anyway. I will not return it but give it to a charity shop - perhaps an Italian/Danish/English speaking person will like it!

Beautiful, touching, tearful

Firstly Pierce Brosnan what an amazing, versatile actor (didn't know that he was bilingual). Such a beautiful film looking into some difficult family dynamics. Fantastic locations and a bit of romance, there is plenty to love about this touching film.

A charming and quirky film with a very absorbing and interesting story line! There are various languages and very clear sub titles where necessary and that in no way intrudes on enjoyment of the film! My husband and I really enjoyed it and recommend it as a really good film with enough twists to keep your interest, not to mention the fabulous Italian scenery which is a joy to watch!

Weird film
Verified purchase
Starring Pierce Brosnan and a load of Danish actors in a Danish film (but Brosnan only speaks English) with a slow, weird, "rom com" plot. I quite liked the Danish with English subtitles and I liked the premise but it was very slow, meandered weirdly and the romance was as the end credits came up.I stuck with it so it wasn't entirely bad, but very strange!
