This programme has a fantastically interesting premise and a superb cast. The pilot is a little heavy-handed, but in fairness they are setting their stall out and have a lot to get across. This is also true of most shows; who wants the pilot to the best it ever gets?!? I watched every episode, and can attest to the fact that Lie to Me gets better and better. It's always engaging, deals with hate, violence and evil in a thought-provoking way, and is beautifully filmed. It's funny, varied and the characters develop realistically and become people you genuinely care about.

Surprisingly good even with the far-fetched premise

Member of Lightman's team gets excited. "Wow, that's a huge amount of [insert emotion] you're showing there."

This statement somehow scares the criminal/witness and they instantly confesses everything he/she knows.

This seems to be one of the most common elements of every episode. The so called deception experts look for micro expressions on people's faces and as soon as they spot one they go into what looks like a state of orgasmic bliss and scream out the knowledge of their detection with the same enthusiasm of a toddler who finds you when you're playing hide and seek. Just like when playing hide and seek with the toddler, it makes me laugh every time.

I have to admit that the concept that a person can detect a lie 100% of the time using these micro detectors is a bit far fetched. In spite of what they say not everyone is exactly the same and it takes a lot more knowledge of the individual and their baseline state (usually days or weeks of familiarity) before you could start to predict people's deceptions this easily.

So if the concept is that far-fetched and overacted enough to make you laugh out loud, why does this show get four stars? Simple. It's a really enjoyable show.

You can make up your own decision of the premise within about 5-10 minutes of starting to watch the pilot episode and once you decide if you can live with it or not, what you're left with is a fast paced show filled with interesting characters and story lines. Personally I like to think of what they can do as a kind of magic and this allows me to enjoy the rest of the show... in particular Tim Roth's lead character.

It's nothing new to see the big Hollywood names coming to the small screen these days. Even then I have to say that Tim Roth's portrayal of Cal Lightman is worth watching this show for alone. In some ways he's your typical savant for this kind of show. He's arrogant, lacking the correct social standards and is rude to people in just the right way to make you laugh. However, Tim Roth brings and edge to the character that makes him perfect for the role and it makes for excellent television.

Overall this is a surprisingly strong opening series to a pretty great show. It is a procedural so be prepared for a bit of repetition and formulaic stories, but at the same time the writing and acting is good enough to raise the stakes and make you eager to watch the next episode in the series, and indeed the next series once you've finished season one.

I recommend this show for those who enjoy 40-45 minutes of easy watching and light entertainment.

A friend of mine recommended this as I study body language and emotions... I never imagined these series would be so good. The stories are enhanced by the interesting research done by Dr. Paul Ekman, American psychologist who's been a pioneer in the study of emotions and their relation to facial expressions, a fascinating world.
Each episode has a good dose of humor, Tim Roth is an terrific actor, I would give this 10 stars if I could!.

One of my favourite series
Verified purchase
This was one of my favourite series. I regret it did not last long, but I also noticed that already during the second series it was starting to deteriorate.

Based on the idea that it is possible to detect when people are lying from non-verbal communication, the first series developped a series of simple stories based on the uneasy cooperation of Dr. Lightman, the Roth character (based on a real-life scientist) with the police. Dr. Lightman is an extravagant man, grumpy enough, but not on the manic level of House MD.

Lightman is divorced and his relations are conflicted, especially with a young male colleague. He has a soft side and is very protective of his adolescent daughter. This sideplot (the daughter getting mixed up with dad's work) started to get annoying, maybe also because the actress playing the daughter was quite annoying.

I am sorry the series did not developped better, because I really liked the idea of studying non-verbal communication and the opening credits were really good.

This show was free for a while on Prime video, but they took all series off, not sure why, very annoying.
This is a cleverly written show, and believable, with the 'micro expressions' when someone lies.
Well cast, easy to watch over and over again.

I did see a couple of episodes at a friends house a few weeks back and I liked what I saw so decided to purchase it

I'd only ever seen this advertised on tv when it was aired on Sky, but never actually watched it back then. However, I did see a couple of episodes at a friends house a few weeks back and I liked what I saw so decided to purchase it. Tim Roth gives a brilliant performance and the rest of the cast blend well with him. However, I know there was a focus of a Cal/Gillian sexual tension, but after viewing more episodes I thought it was more of Cal/Ria tension, especially in Depraved Heart and Blinded.

I enjoyed the pilot and subsequently purchased Season 1. The pilot was very entertaining but I feel the subsequent episodes are less light hearted and I probably won’t get Season 2.
