Where are the subtitles
Verified purchase
They go to great lengths to describe how they have restored the picture, which is very good. Unfortunately when you try to access the subtitles, all you get when the dialogue is in French is the message "Speaking French".
Just because a lot of the dialogue is English is not sufficient reason to omit the subtitles. When it was shown on the BBC they had the subtitles so why can't whoever is selling this manage it . A very shoddy restoration.

Rutger Hauer's finest performance.

I believe this to be Rutger Hauer's finest performance, in a quiet but beautiful film directed by the great Ermanno Olmi. Based on the book by Joseph Roth, the film follows an alcoholic vagrant on the streets of Paris, and the encounters he has with friends and strangers.

La Leggenda del santo bevitore will stay with you forever. Rutger Hauer loses himself completely to the character of Andreas and ensures that his acting will never be bettered. A beautiful tragic story - but executed with a light and uplifting tone. I cannot recommend this movie enough!! I only wish that Rutger's talents were put to use more in movies such as this.

Watch a legend...

Rutger Hauer shows his sensitive side in this thought-provoking, slowly unfolding, tragic tale. Quite spellbinding. However, if you prefer him in his more usual action roles, then this film probably isn't for you. Worth watching and stays true to the book on which it's based by Joseph Roth.

This is an extraordinary film with Rutger Hauer giving possibly his best ever performance. A very slow but beautifully shot fable well worth the time.
