Tinley
5.0 out of 5 starsUnmatched
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 August 2016
What can be said about this landmark piece of cinema that hasn't already been said? David Lean's masterpiece among a peerless body of work is presented here in a stunning remastered 1080p transfer, with a suitably beefed-up DTS-HD 5.1 lossless soundtrack. This is probably as close as home viewers are going to get to Lean's original vision of the audacious British officer who united Arabia's disparate tribes to fight off the invading Turks during World War I. Seriously, this film looks better than any 50+ year-old film should look, with a warm film grain, bright, colourful highlights and satisfyingly deep blacks. Add career-best performances from Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif and you have one of the greatest screen epics ever made.

Audio options are the original English track and a Spanish dub, while the subtitles are in English, Hindi and Spanish. Unsurprisingly for a movie with a running time of nearly four hours, the majority of the bonus features are bundled on a second blu ray disc. A must for lovers of the movie, these include an hour-long 'making of' documentary, featuring archive interviews with some of the key players involved in the film, including David Lean himself, a wonderful 20-minute featurette from 2009 with Peter O'Toole reminiscing over the film's production, and a short segment with Steven Spielberg, who declares Lawrence of Arabia to be his favourite film of all time. Can't argue with that. Essential.

1.0 out of 5 stars!!BLANK SCREEN!!

loading disc ok up to pressing 'ok' to start actual movie; thereafter only soundtrack comes thru as the screen remains totally blacked-out; guess this is reason for the low price of 3 pounds; otherwise called 'deception'; still, cant be bothered to ask for a refund ; suppose it just hurts amazon's image...

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning picture and sound

Having watched this fabulous movie is pretty much every format I felt hopeful that the 4k picture would be something more stunning and it was. At times breathtaking at others merely very very good. Colour rendition too is truly stunning. But you do need a fast internet connection, on occasion when mine slowed the picture pixelated, it that was nothing to do with the quality of the stream. Will look for other 4k streams now I know how good a transfer can be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth a watch

One of the better films of modern times, it was time well spent watching. Imo, this was not Peter o'Toole's finest role in his long career, & not sure he got TEL exactly right, but nonetheless, a very good performance. The scenery was stunning, and the music, for once, ideal. Again, imho, not Omar Sharif's best role, and allowing for the speculation that TEL in his poem in "7 Pillars of Wisdom"dedicated "to SA", widely assumed to be Sherif Ali, if so, this was not in any way made clearer in the film. However, putting aside these minor criticisms, enjoyed the movie over a quiet Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Classic Film.

Makes me feel old, showed this film when it was first released, and considering its age it stands up well, the 4K transfer is excellent, I cannot fault it, you would think it had been filmed yesterday. the sound is mostly excellent but there was a little distortion in the music at the beginning which could have been caused with the streaming. the film itself is excellent, the desert scenes are still stunning, Peter O Toole, Anthony Quinn, Alec Guiness, Claude Rains, Jack Hawkins all play their parts to perfection, I can recommend this version to anyone who has or hasn't ssen it, I already have the Blu-Ray but this version on PRIME is good value and well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A huge film about a charismatic character

We had both seen the film when it came out and had loved it then. There was more to enjoy this time with the benefit of the wisdom of years. This is a huge film - in concept and in execution. Lawrence is a fascinating and complex character who, for some reason, inspired the Arabs. It's interesting to observe how his leadership skills did not appeal to his British masters but when they realised how charismatic he was to the Arabs they soon took to him. Tragic that his life ended so early but it has no doubt added to his enduring appeal. All praise to director, David Lean.

4.0 out of 5 stars ... as anyone who has heard of it knows how brilliant it is
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 October 2015

No point in reveiwing this film as anyone who has heard of it knows how brilliant it is. Some people are put off by its length. However, I think it is one of the most intensely wacthable films ever made. Every scene is a pure joy to watch. The film is 5 star but I have reservations about the transfer. Colors are excellent but the images are over sharp which takes away some of the super smooth images and skin tones that I associate with Technicolor. My other gripe is that the image is slightly cropped. So instead of the original 2.20 or 2.35 to 1 you get approximately 2.05 to 1. This is a pity because David Leans original film is arguably the best example of widescreen cinema ever. Every frame was composed for the super wide format and some of this artistic perfection is lost in the transfer. I would pay good money to watch this at the cinema again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable

If Lawrence is your hero, as he is mine, this film is unmissable. Great photography and great performances from Peter O'Toole, who could not be better cast as Lawrence, and Omar Sharif. Many other excellent supporting actors. No women....ooops did I say that? Men doing what men like doing, having meetings, forming alliances, politicking and going to war. In the words of the man himself: "We were fond together, and there are here memories of the sweep of the open places, the taste of the wide winds, the sunlight, and the hopes in which we worked. It felt like morning, and the freshness of the world-to-be intoxicated us. We were wrought up with ideas inexpressible and vaporous, but to be fought for."

5.0 out of 5 stars Super story told in amazing cinematography.

An excellent film despite it's age with superb video clarity and pleasing old fashioned understandable dialogue. A great cast of actors brings life to the story. After an interval of probably 20 years it's great to revisit an amazing story about a real life historical character. It is a long film (3.5 hours) but does have an intermission. Note the film starts with just an audio musical overture (about 10 mins long) and a black screen. Not a fault as I thought.!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film 4k remastered, NOT 4k

Great film looks stunning and only £7.99.
Just buy the special edition, same editions, releases as " River Kwai ", "close encounters" and " easy rider" etc. Actually the £7.99 version is 4k remastered and newer than the £20 release having a 2019 date.
Looks and sounds great upscaled thru 5-1 Dolby.
Long film but time flies.5/5 👍

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful historic film

This film maybe old but it’s screen presence is still felt today. Wonderful actors and director. Sheer pleasure to watch from start to finish. Timeless production. Peter O’Toole is magnificent as Lawrence. Beautifully put together to tell the story in an empathic way of a national hero who was let down by government. What a brief heroic life he led, but what an impact he had, wow!
