Once I got over the 4:3 ratio size screen , as I had never seen the earlier series episodes this was a great surprise, T.V. regulars like Rocky Carroll(Vance, N.C.I.S, And Daniel Benzali(N.Y.P.D Blue, Murder 1) earlier in their career, will be interesting once I get series 2

It is very important to watch the introductory feature which explains the series. This series is deliberately filmed in a documentary style with regular actors (not rising stars). The action is continuous and fast with no time wasted in filming and the plot falling like dominoes. Unlike many painful, as they run out of good plots series, this series does not get mixed up much in personal lives of the main actors. The plot focuses on the story. It is a sometimes difficult to watch because you have to stay focused but the number of series tells you how great it is. Personally I switch off with the ridiculous sub plot routine in many series which concentrate on the main protagonist's personal lives. This is all good value action, with no time wasted. In addition the story often describes conflicts felt by the approach to arrest or conviction. So the stories are not just focussed on the end, the means are debated. I recommend.

Good first season

It arrived days before I was expecting it - well done. This is the first time I have seen season one of Law and Order and although a different cast that I am used to (as seen on 5USA) it is just as good. I intend to continue with purchasing this series and will be looking forward to season two soon. Thank you.

Liked later seasons of this series, so I thought I'll watch it from the beginning, but the first season didn't impress me that much. It's very old

Law enforcement, city style.

Very good drama series showing both sides of the Law from Police and Lawyers and eventually the courtroom. Some disturbing cases but watching the lawyers tricks in prosecuting and defending the accused is a real eye opener, especially the deals made for smaller crimes to bring down bigger criminals. Not for the faint hearted but very gripping none the less. I was particularly amazed how the threat of capital punishment was discussed and used as a bargaining tool as if it meant nothing. Gripping and not for the faint hearted.

A classic TV show, Law & Order has been on the air for 20 years. After a while of occaisionally watching re-runs on the Hallmark channel or the "new" (actually five-year old) episodes on Channel 5, I decided to pick up this DVD to see how Law & Order began. Suprisingly, the show is almost exactly the same in its first season as it is today. The format is simple but effective: in the first half of the show, a pair of detectives investigate a murder, while the second half focuses on the attempt to prosecute the criminal responsible.

This may sound a little straightforward at first, but this formula is simply a base for the show to build complex and involving storylines concerning the important issues facing the world; racism, abortion and domestic violence are just a few of the topics covered in the first season alone. All of these issues are addressed with sensitivity and subtlety, and never seem sensationalist in their depiction.

The acting from the main cast is excellent, with George Dzundza (Basic Instinct), Chris Noth (Sex and the City) and Dann Florek (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) in the police roles, and Michael Moriarty (Courage Under Fire), Richard Brooks (I've never seen him in anything else) and Steven Hill (Mission Impossible) as the prosecutors. The easy banter between Dzundza and Noth is a highlight of the police segment, and Michael Moriarty is simply incredible during the courtroom scenes (particuly during the episode "Indifference", which remains my favorite L&O episode).

This is a great season of early Law & Order that has aged extremely well (this season began two years before I was born, yet the issues covered remain relevent today). It only gets better from here.
