Way of the Gun(s)

Like all good things, they must come to an end. Most boringly, 'Justified' is the only series that I've ever followed in its entirety - all episodes, each balanced performance and every perfectly delivered line I've savoured and appreciated. Shame we are at the final hurdle then, but thankfully the creators of this particular series have gone out to pasture with dignity and most importantly, leaving you with a desire to want more.

Laconic ladies man and cool as a cucumber rogue U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (the very excellent Timothy Olyphant) and his arch nemesis Boyd Crowder (again, an excellent Walton Goggins) edge ever closer to their inevitable showdown. However before we get there, there's a whole heap of gunfighting, backstabbing and all round rootin' tootin' shenanigans to get through. In an effort to bring him down, Raylan is using Boyd’s fiancée Ava (Joelle Carter) as his secret informant, against the better judgment of his fellow officers (Jacob Pitts, Erica Tazel, Nick Searcy and Rick Gomez). However, things get real complicated when drug lord Avery Markham (Sam Elliott) arrives in Harlan intent on putting a severe spanner in the works as he builds his own pot empire - bringing with him a whole host of gunslingers and murderers.

This final season has been a joy - both riveting and most of all, human. The characters are so well drawn that each one has a full developed arc that thankfully plays out. No ambiguous endings here, we get to say goodbye to everyone (even Wynn Duffy who I pray gets his own spin off!) and it sure is sad. The final moments (which I won't spoil here) between Raylan and Boyd are both poignant and poetic, with their last line to each other guaranteed to linger in the memory. The writers, producers and directors deserve a real pat on the back for not only this, but the entire run of the series - its been a solid ride with nary a blip. Just perfect.

Sony's UK DVD release sports a fine transfer with robust audio. Shame about the lacklustre extra special feature (would have much preferred a retrospective look back documentary) but its a minor niggle. All in all, a great way to wind up the show, even though I could dearly sit through another six seasons of these guy's battling it out - no problem. Then again, this is the real way to go out: Leave 'em wanting more.

DRAMATIC FAREWELL TO ONE OF TELEVISION'S VERY BEST
Verified purchase
This final season surely heads for a showdown between maverick Marshal Raylan Givens and villain Boyd Crowder. They represent two sides of the same coin. Who will survive? Or are both destined to perish? Charismatic Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins continue to delight, chemistry evident as their characters ingeniously try to outwit the other. All now becomes complicated with the arrival in Kentucky's Harlan of silverhaired Avery Markham - he intent upon buying up property, fatal "accidents" guaranteed for those who decline.

This series is superb, and has been from the very start. Nothing here is shallow - scripts incisive, acting top-notch. Even characters on screen but a minute or so have depth. Many of the villains have a certain charm (Boon excepted, he truly a nasty piece of work). Praise too for creators. Such is their respect for writers and cast, dialogue does not suffer from a distracting ubiquitous music track. Music here is an asset - well placed and atmospheric. Certain other series please note.

A word about the dialogue. It really is a joy. My favourite Raylan utterance came in an earlier season: "Like a dead owl, I don't give a hoot." This time one of the characters (Boyd I think) observes in passing, "The past is a statement. The future is a question." This is quality fare.

Eleven episodes, full of twists and turns - not to mention many deaths, some of them very sudden. Just one bonus feature, detailing the pains taken to make everything just right.

Also to their credit, creators did not allow this to become one of those series that drag on with ever-decreasing returns. They knew exactly when to go, ending on a high.

In short? Hail an excellent series which has done its fans proud.

The final showdown
Verified purchase
Raylan Givens uses Ava as his informer to get Boyd Crowder while drug kingpin Avery Markham moves into Harlan. The final season, starting off straight away picking up where season 5 left off with a shock death and tying up loose ends as it goes. This has been a quality crime drama not watched by many but by some miracle has made it this far with excellent performances from the whole cast and Boyd Crowder becoming one of TV's all time great villains. Sam Elliott joins the cast as Avery Markham forming a partnership with Mary Steenburgen who was introduced towards the end of season 5 as a female crime boss in a bit of unlikely but inspired casting and it all leads up to a satisfying conclusion and final showdown between U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens and crime boss Boyd Crowder. An excellent criminally underrated series. A must watch for fans of American crime dramas though it'll help if you start from season 1 first.

What an End
Verified purchase
It's hard to believe such a good series came from a few short stories. Although the final series the quality continued to the very end I was distracted by the appearance of Sam Elliot who for me will always be the Night Clerk from Once an Eagle. Mary Steenbergen shows a side to her skills not seen before and plays a very convincing part.

Family vendetta continues to cause a fly in the ointment to Bord's scheming.

The sub plots continued to appear with previous characters coming to the fore in ways not imagined.

When I look back at Season 6 it is hard to believe this was the end of the line. I felt more could come possibly in a spin off with the right directors and producers.

Truly enjoyable and worth the money.

Justified until the end!
Verified purchase
Once the series was no longer available on Prime, I felt compelled to find out What Happened to Everyone, and bought the final season. It was as intense as any tv series I have ever watched, and kept me interested and entertained to the end. Sadly, there is no more Justified, but I have them on my Prime account now so that's ok as I can watch them repeatedly. Having lived in Kentucky for 20 years, it is always interesting to see how little things have changed.

Great series - a shame this is the last one...
Verified purchase
The sixth and final season of Justified maintains the high standard of the other five. Some TV series are simply great (Sopranos, Mad Men, The Wire etc.), and others are great, if you like that kind of stuff (Breaking Bad, Deadwood, Game of Thrones etc.). Justified falls into the latter category, but is still one of the best.
The dialogue is snappy and witty and it is full of characters fantastic characters and storylines. If you like Elmore Leonard books - and I do - you will love Justified. I will definitely watch the whole thing again.

Sad that this is the last one

Sad to see the end of this series, but it was fantastic while it lasted. And unlike some others I could mention, it went out at the top of its game. If you haven't watched this series yet, buy them all, set aside a long weekend, and be prepared to be entertained!

Fantastic stuff as far as I am concerned
Verified purchase
Some shows you don't want to let go of. However, Season 6 brings our collection of quasi hero and villain to a long awaited climax. Of course from watching Season 1 though 5 you already know that in Harlan County if people are going to ride off into the sunset it's going to be a sunset wearing a laconical, cynical grin. Gary Cooper aka Timothy Olyphant aka Raylon Givens gives us what we wanted yet again ....a glorious tribute to that Old Gunfighting Man Alone thing where you can't wait to see who is going to be left standing when the smoke clears.
Fantastic stuff as far as I am concerned. Leaves a big hole in my favourite viewing .
