I missed Justified hidden away on FX when it was first aired, and finally got around to buying it - partly due to Timothy Olyphant as the lead (after his excellent performance as Seth Bullock in HBO's Deadwood) but also due to Graham Yost and Elmore Leonard making up a strong team of executive producers and writers. I was not disappointed. Pulp Fiction absolutely sums up this series. Double dealing, goons, black comedy, crime, money and drugs in an endless good vs bad cycle - however, the show never takes itself too seriously, which is one of its greatest strengths. The ongoing relationship between Law (Raylan Givens) and Crime (Boyd Crowder - Walton Goggins) is a running thread of the series and the interplay between Olyphant and Goggins (who half despise and admire each other in equal measure) is a treat to watch. Season 1 was strong, but with the Bennett clan causing trouble in Harlan Country with drug trafficking and other mishaps, Raylan's troubles increase drastically, as does the strength of the plot and story arcs. Justified was described as 'Criminally Underated' and I believe it is. It is based on a great story by Elmore Leonard (as well as being produced by him!) and has a superb set of actors with comic moments and genuine tension - with the final plots tying up very satisfactorily. I have also seen Season 3 now, and can say that it maintains an exceptionally high standard. It's not just some hillbilly cop shop rip off. With its pulp fiction roots, black comedy, and Olyphant's portrayal of Givens, the episodes fly by and never out stay their welcome.

JUSTIFIED SEASON 2, EVEN BETTER THAN THE FIRST SEASON...

Television drama these days is amazing, the quality of the writing, direction, performances, locations, music are all superb.

So with that in mind, it can sometimes be difficult to pick out the great from the good.

Lost (y'know before they dropped the ball in that final season)

Breaking Bad

Mad Men

The Unit

The West Wing

Battlestar Galactica

Justified is brilliantly entertaining, it's set in the hills and mountains of Kentucky (though filmed entirely in California) the lead character is US Marshall Raylan Givens, played by Timothy Olyphant, sent back to his home town of Harlan County after he shoots a drug dealer in Florida.

Just because everyone speaks with a southern drawl, and often some are wearing clothing that appear to never get washed, shouldn't fool you into thinking this is a show about dumb hill-folk.
Justified features some of the best writing on tv, if not the best.

After the events of season 1, where Raylan is placed in a tough spot by hitmen from Florida and local gangsters, the plot moves forward, an old family feud with a local clan disguises a land grab, drug dealing, murder, kidnapping, and revenge.

Utterly brilliant, I watched all 13 episodes in 2 days, and the ending featuring the EMMY award winning performance by Margo Martindale is just so powerful and moving.

Can't wait for season 3.

Highly Recommended.

Completely addictive.

I was given series one of Justified as a gift and had to immediately buy season 2. I was already a fan of Walter Hill's films -Southern Comfort, The Long Riders and Crossroads already being favourites of mine- and had thoroughly enjoyed Timothy Olyphant's portrayal of the psychotic sherrif in Deadwood so I admit I was predisposed to like this.
Season One seemed to have killed off the villain and I was delighted to discover that he had survived into season two. A well played and complex baddie is as important as a hero in sustaining a drama as far as I am concerned, especially when there are few absolutes about good and bad characters in this plot.
I see this series as a modern day spaghetti western. Beautiful photography, brilliant one-liners, complex characters and surprising, unpredictable plot lines utilising modern problems in rural America. This is completely addictive.

The acting and set pice dialogs are very good as are the one liners. Sometimes clunky and hmed up just too much. But very good bingeworthy fun

FIRST SEASON WAS GOOD SECOND SEASON IS SIMPLY SUPERB! AN INTELLIGENT LOOK ON DEEP RURAL AMERICAN, WITH A TWITCH ON LIGHT IRONY
Verified purchase
yes, it finally occurred to me, there is a commun background between this series and the movie "DELIVERANCE", they both take a look on deep, rural America, but in "DELIVERANCE" that look is hard, heading streight to tragedy, in this great series it get tempered with a touch, even more than a simply touch, of light, amazing irony. There is tragedy too, of course, and violence, and gripping action, but still that touch of wit and irony get running under the surface and finally wins all. And the charachters are great too, Timothy Oliphant's Rayland Givens is simply his best performing ever, the other main roles are wonderfully playd, and even the smallest ones are great, take for example this young actress which plays wonderfully the role of 14 years old Loretta!

I am really really glad to have bought both series, and look forward to buy the third one.

Everyone who is searching for an appolling, really wit and intelligent show must have a look at this one.

I can't fault the reviews above. I simply never buy DVD's, I mainly listen to music, but this show has just got under my skin. It sems quite unlike most US shows, obvious, fast paced, no nonsens, no subtlty. This is slow, oblique, witty and ambivelant. You are presented with the dilemma of whether the criminals or the "law", is more out of control and dangerous.

I find the strength of the show are the secondary characters. Raylan is a still, all right, not so still centre, but others proved much of the interest. Boyd and Arlo, Raylan's father, in particular, are magnifecently acted, but right on through Art, Raylan's boss, Mags, Ava, Gary, Duffy and Wynona. All the characters are well rounded, believable and unpredictable. As an aside, am I the only man to find Wynona, Raylan's Ex, one of the most attractive women on television.

If you like an intelligent, well acted, brilliantly scripted, crime series, you can't go wrong with this one.

Wry, witty, well scripted and beautifully acted by Olyphant who ensures the humanity in the brutality. Oh yes, there is a body-count.
