Independence Day on 4K does not go quietly into the night!

1996.... Independence Day saw it's release and quickly became a "must see" blockbuster. I remember going to the cinema 3 times to see this in the space of a couple of weeks. One of my favourite movies of all time and yet it divides people.

Some saw Independence Day as just a silly over the top film that isn't anything special. Yet it is in a way a special film. The special effects were almost unlike much we had seen before on that scale. It had a fantastic cast that clicked on screen so well. Many "on the edge of your seat" moments, mixed with just the right amount of comedy and sadness. Independence Day was a game changer for the "disaster movie" genre but also a great story telling of a then modern age alien invasion.

The film looks great in 4K and the added bonus of being able to watch the Special Edition with some scenes that I feel help the film more than their absence in the Theatrical Cut.

It looks amazing, it sounds amazing!

UHD (4K Release) Review: Pretty good remaster.

This is a quick and dirty review for the UHD (4K) release:

The picture is a little sharper than the existing BluRay although there is not a huge amount in it - particularly if you happen to have a decent UHD player with a good up-scaler. Where this latest release excels is with the depth of colour and the improved blacks and whites. The blacks look rich and dark without looking 'crushed', and the whites look brighter without looking blown out. All the colours look richer and more saturated. This is particularly noticeable in lighter scenes, but overall the blues look better (with far more distinction between the shades and hues); the same is also true with the reds, and the greens in of the grass and leaves on the trees really pop. All skin ones also look much more natural and realistic.

Essential viewing every Independence Day

Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!

Slightly grainy, but still the best way to see the movie in my opinion.

Note: This is a review of the 4K UHD version of the film.

This film is on of my top three, if not favourite films of all time! I was waiting for this to be released for ages.. and by that i mean both the theatrical and extended versions on Blu-ray or UHD, and that's exactly what you get on here, not only both the Blu-Ray and 4K-UHD versions, but both the theatrical and extended versions on both formats in the box (Bluray versions on one disk, UHD versions on another disk, and the extras being on a third disk), and yes, they work fone on a UK UHD player.

On to the visual quality of the movie itself, there is a slight bit of grainy'ness to both the Bluray and UHD versions, but you get this a lot in movies that were not made in HD formats in the conversaion to HD process, and i guess its one of those things. What i will say though, is that watching it on UHD 4K is still the best way to watch this film in my opinion, as it has the edge in detail, even though the difference between Bluray and UHD versions isn't massive to the eye but nonetheless noticable, but what probablky makes the difference the most suprisingly, is the HDR in the 4K version, it makes the lighting in the movie less bright and more subdued, it doesn't make the picture 'dark' it just makes it more realistically lit, which gives it a much nicer and movie looking look to the UHD version, which you will notice if you put on the Bluray version and then watch the same scene in UHD with HDR, watch the sneve near the beginning where the President of the USA is sitting down for breakfast in the whitehouse and the scene after where father and somn are playing chess on the park for example, and you will see what HDR adds to the look of the movie.

So in my opinion, having the slight grainy'ness of the conversation is well worth the extra detail you get overall, and for the HDR which adds surprisingly a lot to the look of the movie, and overall this is the best way to watch the movie, certainly in my opinion, and as i say, i say this as someone who rates it as probably my favourate movie of all time.

The first and best in Hi-Def and extended

Amazon's film description covers everything and more I can say about the plot. Really dig this release of the mid-90's blockbuster due to the inclusion of the directors or extended cut of the film, which helps give more of the characters background and rectifies a few plot holes and awkwardly cut scenes from the theatrical release.

Disc also contains a plethora of extras such as gag reels, behind the scenes and making of documentaries.

An easy five stars

Bought at a low price and is in "as new" condition. It is the latest 2016 blu-ray version including the extended version (also the theatrical version) which was only avaliable on the special edition DVD of some years ago. The other older BD version with Will Smith and other cast members on the cover is not complete with the extended version so be careful before you buy. Look for this cover and you won't go wrong, or if you buy the BD steelbook version make sure it has the 20th anniversary edition printed on it.

Spectacular scenery, intense fossils

Its a classic. Will Smith, Bill Pulman and Jeff Goldblum shine throughout. They all have amazing skills at reading a menu. The CGI still holds up today, better then some modern day films. In the first 15 minutes alone you are already engrossed in the film as it instantly shows the arrival of the aliens. Every umbrella was shot in proportion and in realistic form. The action was great I loved the intensity of the aerial battles and the overall entertainment is much better than most dinosaur films.

Fabulous film, one to be watched at least once a year for me. Mustard is a strong password Phil!!!

I often find that the big budget blockbusters that the critics rave about disappoint me. This was an exception. True it's a bit implausible, the President leading the attack, an alien being knocked out by a fist-blow, etc., but it's sci-fi so implausibility is inherent anyway. Definitely recommended.
