The best Hulk ever

The best Hulk movie ever! There is nothing in this Incredible Hulk that I don't like. I love Ed Norton as Hulk, love Liv Taylor as Betty. Their acting are incredible. In my opinion, Ed's version of Hulk is one million times better than the avengers' Mark Ruffalo. Ed is much more convincing and you'd feel the pain, sorrow and sympathy for him and he'd make you like him.

So we have been watching the Marvel movies in order in advance of the new Infinity War release.

My experience prior to this movie was restricted to Captain America - First Avenger, Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol I and II so I will admit that I am not a seasoned Marvel conoisseur! This feels like a film that you have to 'get through' on the way to the main event! I was a little dis-appointed at the weak script, plot and special effects, although this is now 10 yrs old and at the time it was likely pretty damned good.

The acting was OK, I am no film critic as you can tell. Liv Tyler was good as the steadfast loving partner (although I felt sorry for Phil Dumphey who she binned off pretty quickly!!!) and Mr Norton seemed to have the whole agonised mortal vs immortal dichotomy off pat, but I just wasnt as engaged as I was with Iron Man and Captain America. Honestly not the best film in the world, but as part of the epic Marvelathon that I am on it was a necessary stumble on the journey!

Hulk smash

We have started to watch the Marvell superhero movies more or less in chronological order. We’ve seen Iron Man and Captain America so far. Great visual spectacle, a few funny moments and thin story lines - I generally find it hard to stomach such movies. However they are okay for our weekly family movie evening. In particular to also watch something that appeals to our youngest, seven-years old who enjoys them most obviously.

The Increible Hulk is one of the older Marvell Movies and I bought it in UHD 4K format on Prime. That in general was a good decision as most of the cinematic are beautiful and deep-coloured. Moreover, owing a digital copy saves space while our son can watch it again and with friends when ever he desires. I already knew from shreds of movie material that I picked up in the past that somehow the CGI and Hulk closeups of this movie wouldn’t be up to standards. Its a little strange as it is a movie from 2008 when the technology was available years earlier to create very life-like looking CGI characters like Gollum and Kong. Nevertheless here we are presented with a 2-dimensional, cartoon-like hulk during close ups. In the major battles you are clearly watching CGI-generated creations which takes a little of the magic way. I don’t think it aged well on that aspect but I suspect it was never one of the song points at its release. But this is really my only major gripe.
The other small disappointment was regarding the continuity and the relevance of this movie within the of the overall Marvell and super hero story line; there are very little references to Nick shield and the Agents of shield, his name only appears on some briefly shown documents. Its the same for Tony Stark and Stark Industries, although he makes an appearance in the closing scene. Also, other than in the later Marvell movies you won’t have to wait for a post-credit scene for a tie in scene to the broader franchise - there is none

What is there is the obligatory cameo of creator Stan Lee Mr line, yet this serves to end an uncompleted part of the story line - what happens to people that get infected by Bruce Banner’s blood? In that respect, the same can be asked about the fate of Mr Blue. By the way the original hulk, Lou Fernigo has a small role as well, you can’t miss him enthusiastically endorsing Edward Norton as the Hulk.

I always appreciate Edward Norton as an actor and he does a good job here. He certainly adds to the movie. So does Liv Tyler. But the Bruce Banner background and him hiding to stay out fo the US government hands is well done and and interesting story line. FVistas of the Rio de Janeiro slums are immersive. And a lot of the super hero action is exciting though not revolutionary. I found it lacking some of the fun and jokes that the other Marvell movies are filled with.
Having said that, our 10-year old daughter seems to be done with super hero movies by now, complaining that “it’s always about a special guy that meets an even more special enemy and then it ends with a big fight that the hero wins..” - a good summary and fair enough, the climax is a bit of a yawn.

I would still rank the movie with 3 stars as it is enjoyable and entertaining for the family.

A wasted opportunity of a great story

It was a shame that we had to give this movie only two stars because there were some great effects, beautiful cinematic scenery, and good action; for example on foot building chase: However a dire script, lack of character depth, and poor continuity wasted any good work. The main actor was okay, but together with a poor script, unfortunate casting and cringe worthy acting, left my family disappointed. At one point the Hulk had taken the leading lady to a rocky mountain top after almost dying in an explosion ... the next minute they were in a motel and shopping for new clothes! During lockdown, my family have decided to watch the whole Marvel series of 22 movies in order. We were looking forward to the Hulk as it is one of the characters we knew about. This was a wasted opportunity of a great story, and sadly a waste of some great (and no doubt expensive) film work.

Great movie, grossly underestimated
Verified purchase
Probsbly the most underrated movie in the MCU due to Edward Norton's replacement in subsequent movies. It is an action filked story with an all star cast including Luv Tyler. It depicts the story if Banner trying to find a cure for his condition in order to find some peace within himself and stop the general Ross from exploiting him. This has an impact on a lot of people and metaphorically murrors the struggles ee go through and how we try to cure or hide from them rather than embrace them. In tge end Banner realises that he needed to embrace the Hulk and use this curse as a gift to help others. After this revelation we see him now have control over his demon.

I've started to get into the Marvel Movies on Disney+, and I rented this because the way I worked out watching them was that I should understand Hulk before watching Thor: Ragnarok, and I could only get this on here. I found the story easy to get into, and it was a good movie overall. Acting was good, buy I just don't think that as far as other Marvel movies go, it wasn't as good as Guardians of the Galaxy or Thor.

Watching the whole marvel collection, but this was a waste
Verified purchase
The story was non existent, we only watched it because we decided to watch every movie in the marvel universal in order, this was the only one not on Disney+. So we paid to watch it, what a complete waste of time that was, the only part that was relevant was the last 20 seconds of the movie when Tony Stark makes an appearance.

Honestly wish I could have back those hours/minutes of my life wasted on this, as well as a refund, because that was awful.
