That one however did stand up to being squashed in a vice, and then many blows with a hammer before the learner managed to damage it beyond safe usage.
He couldn't tell me why he felt the need to break it, and due to this and several other behavioural issues, eventually the college did not feel the need to retain him on the course!
Over the years I had previously tried several different styles and makes of 'G' and 'F' clamps and cramps, but none had lasted more than a few weeks without having to be replaced, so although these were more expensive than others, they more than proved the old adage that you get what you pay for.
I bought many more, and in different sizes and styles, for use in the workshops and all have proved to be robust enough for use in that testing environment.
I was so impressed that I bought some for myself in a couple of different lengths for use in my home workshop, and am more than happy to highly recommend them to others
Pros
They are designed to be used one handed. The clamp "pumps" tighter with the handle, and there is a "break release" on them too.
For what they are they are cheap (10 bucks for a pair)
Even though they are cheap, they are solid, well made and reliable.
They come in a variety of sizes, but this size is actually pretty strong and effective for a plastic and metal mechanical clamp
Every god damned knife making video I see has 3 things in it: A metal file, a Sharpie pen, and Irwing clamps. It says something that they are what the pros use.
They have removable rubber/plastic pads. I say this because Ive had to take them off when i got gack on them, and also because thus far, they have never marked, or scratched, anything Ive clamped.
Just to reiterate... these clamps main function is to be a decent clamp, that you can put on ONE HANDED. Let that sink in.
Cons
If you really have to clamp the hell out of something, for compression reasons, you will need to use something like a metal G-clamp or a vice.
These are not intended as a substitute for a press. These clamp things in place, with reasonable force. Youre idea of reasonable might be 150 kilos, which these wont do.
The are plastic and metal, so if you get epoxy or resin on them you had better clean them real quick.
If you need to clamp something in place to use heavy tools on it (rasp file, grinder etc), one will not be enough. This said, thats not what they are designed for.
Conclusion
The best recommendation I can give is that I bought 2 because I kept seeing them in knife making videos, and tonight I ordered another 4, so I can use six on the same project. (Micarta press, gluing handles etc). I know some people are going to get these and think "jeez they dont compress hard enough!" but the point is this: Even in situations where you need to use heavy metal G-clamps, how are you going to hold things in position whilst you apply them? With Irwin clamps you can hold everything together with one hand, and quickly clamp them together with the other. If the combined pressure is not enough, you can go get your G-clamps knowing everything is held in place.
This said, one of the reasons I ordered more is that they are so quick, easy and convenient to use, having a few more means I can get the extra pressure on. Then one click, they release. Ive voted with my wallet, these things are so handy.
Top tip: Get a roll or two of wax paper. If you are doing projects with glue and resin, slapping down 20 pence worth of wax paper between your clamps and the job, will save you potentially hours of cleaning up afterwards.
Note you get the Irwin Quick-Grip. There seems to be some confusion around the mini grip on Amazon.

If you do carpentry, a single pair probably won't be enough. You'll soon wish you had more
I have zero experience in woodwork and DIY but had a project in mind for a drop-down desk for my allotment shed and got a couple of woodworking books which had suggested these things as good tools. Absolutely great - can’t recommend them highly enough. I could hold a hinge in place whilst I screwed it in, whilst it was level and even; held bits of wood together whilst I glued them; held the desk board at the right level until I could mark out where the hinges were going to go... these things are SO handy. Really easy to use too.
