In the great tradition of crude US humour

The Yanks do love their crude movie comedies. The lineage goes right back to the 1970/80s, with movies like the National Lampoon series, and Caddyshack. These are considered classics over there.

They didn't float so effortlessly in the UK, where they're now recorded more as cult classics than blockbusters.

The Yanks seem to rediscover crudity every few years too. American Pie. There's Something About Mary. And this movie is a rediscovery of the themes that occurred in 2010.

The appearance of Chevy Chase in this movie is no accident. The movie is clearly trying to link back to the National Lampoon series. In fact, this movie could be called National Lampoon's Time Travel Nonsense.

So, if I'm so down on this, why did I watch it?

The movie stars Craig Robinson and Clarke Duke, both from The Office. Duke in particular just somehow seems both funny and watchable, even if – like Robinson – he's basically playing the same character each time.

However, I've got to say I should've spent the time watching The Office episodes again.

Other than praising those two actors, there isn't anything positive I can say about this movie. It's just too basic, unoriginal, and sexist (they try to redeem this with one "intelligent and sexy" female character, but her role is limited so it comes across as tokenistic).

In some ways, these movies are always frustrating because while they're crude, they're never actually explicit.

If we made this movie in the UK or Europe, there would be full-frontal nudity, and borderline pornographic sex scenes. Adding that sexy edge is like grinding black pepper on a meal. A little titillation makes things taste better. It also pushes the envelope, making the movie feel more acceptable.

But this is an American movie. They can reference sexual acts (and they do). But they can't depict them because, you know, puritanism.

In some ways, reviews of this movie are not required. People self-select for this kind of 90-minute experience. But if you're one of those who love The Office and want to see more of Duke and Robison then, yes, it's an OK way to spend some time. But just don't expect anything above a few guttural sniggers here and there.

This is a very funny film. Something to just laugh at with some very childish humour. Takes a little while to warm up, but honestly just it watch it.

Only annoying thing was it was free on prime then you had to pay for it, as I started watching it for free then had to pay to finish watching it. A bit annoying. Was it worth paying to watch it, yes. And this is the third time I had seen it.

Aimed at an audience comfortable with continous coarse language

We were looking for "something like" "Back to the Future" - the trailer gave the impression that this might be like that. The basic story like could have worked quite well, but was spoilt for us by the continual coarse language.

We switched off after about 20 minutes and watched "Back to the Future" again.

Funny in places, much better than the seauel

Didn't suck totally like the majority of US comedy films of the last....well forever. It does struggle in places with the typical friends abusing eachother and every character being some form of sterotype

B+ Movie

Obviously a B rated movie title. However, film better than expected. Mindless Sunday afternoon film. It is on the rude side. So best not watched with the kids.
