The Holly & the Ivy

The Holly & the Ivy poignantly and perfectly captures an England on the cusp of dramatic socal, economic and cultural change, and deftly examines the generational gap in a family at odds over matters of faith, family and what the future may hold.

5 stars for the film; 2 for the blu-ray - a missed opportunity to correct previous DVD.

The film is wonderful - one of my Christmas favourites. Very moving, with lovely performances by Celia Johnson, Ralph Richardson, Margaret Leighton, and the others. I easily give the film 5 stars, but the blu-ray gets only 2. While the transfer of the film is beautiful, the blu-ray uses the same cut print as the DVD released 10 years ago. The children's nativity play attended by Ralph Richardson, and the scene in which Denholm Elliott leads some child carolers are still missing. Had the blu-ray provided a complete print, it would have earned 5 stars also.

Very festive

Family stress at Christmas makes for a great plot, but isn't it funny how no one thinks of asking the son to quit the army and stay home to look after the father? And I don't think things on that front have changed that much. That said, a good story with some great performances.

Christmas Past

A nice film which will give an idea of how sentimental Christmas movies were made in the in the past with a very good B&W print. This DVD is the Vintage Classics version by Studio Canal which has an audio commentary, a couple of interviews and a stills gallary. The film comes with English subtitles
