Nun too bad...

I didn't expect much from this film, to be honest. Low budget and apparently jumping on to the current 'nun' bandwagon, the chances were that it would be a disappointment. Not so, as it happened - this turned out to be a decent little claustrophobic horror film with some genuine chill factor here and there. Set in and around a seventeenth century convent (were there any convents in England at that time ?) a young woman (Hannah Arterton) is rescued from a fiery fate for the crime of witchcraft (did the English burn witches?) by the Reverend Mother (Clare Higgins). The magistrate she bullies into releasing the girl into her care is played by Michael Ironside, who makes no attempt whatsoever to disguise his North American accent. Upon arrival at the truly dismal convent populated by a very small number of nuns, it soon becomes apparent that all is not well. There are some decently gory deaths as the action warms up and a sense of genuine peril is encouraged by the gloomy surroundings - you can almost feel that icy wind cutting into you at times. The performances are decent (I suppose to be fair, the somewhat clipped English accents used by the rest of the cast are little more accurate than was Ironside's) the effects are functional most of the time and the film doesn't outstay its welcome. Never going to be considered a classic, but a much worthier effort than some recent offerings from the UK (Yes, Haunting at Borley Rectory, I do mean you) . A decent effort, worth a watch especially if you like period horror films. I'm still not sure if there would be nuns living so openly in a convent a bare 100 years after Henry VIII's dissolution activity though...

Great British horror

I’m a fan of the director anyway so decided to give this a watch.
Another great film with a great cast and some superb acting.
It’s so nice to have a film with some real atmosphere, so many just rely on gore or jump scares, it’s a long time since I’ve seen such a good atmospheric film.

Absolutely worth watching.

I have to love a horror movie where you feel that both the good and bad guys deserve to win.
Watch it - it is great!

It's terrible

A terrible film. Thinly-plotted, overwrought dialogue and over-the-top thesping, topped by some average effects, which wouldn't have mattered if the story was good. I was sucked in by the trailer. Don't be.

The trailer contains all the best bits of the film so when you have watched it don't bother the film is not great at all.

Paul Hyett's latest horror

Bought this a week ago and just watched. Great atmosphere, cool looking locations, solid acting (especially for the genre) and ultimately a full on horror. Ignore the 1 star wonder who may have a personal issue.
