Here Comes Mr. Jordan

7.61 h 34 min1941U
When a boxer (Robert Montgomery) is accidentally called to Heaven 50 years before his time, it is up to celestial executive extraordinaire Mr Jordan (Claude Rains) to straighten out the matter. `Here Comes Mr Jordan' was so successful, it inspired a semi-sequel `Down to Earth' which starred Rita Hayworth and was eventually remade in 1978 as `Heaven Can Wait'.

Best Original Story/Best Screenplay

This is actually a good story and well worth the Academy Award for Best Original Story and Best Screenplay. It's the writing that's the star of the show. I like the characters, but I don't think that Robert Montgomery was right for the part. He's quite bland in all of his films. It is because the story is so good that you forget he's in the part. The writing doesn't life his performance, it merely overshadows him as the writing is better than his performance. I'll definitely watch it again, especially as the love interest is quite touching.

An excellent picture and sound from this transfer. A very nice story and of course it has been copied in various ways over the years. Criterion again have done the business again, and are the go to for quality remastered films. Not cheap generally but qualty costs

Ok ancient fantasy ie 1940s

You'll like this if you like 1940s black and white movies. There is another old black and white film called "Heaven can wait" which I must look at. I think Warren Beattie's remake of "Heaven can wait" is actually the story in Here comes Mr Jordan.

Positively spiritual

This 1941 romantic fantasy employs a unique idea - shifting a person from body to another body. For the main character (played by Robert Montgomery) it means wreaking quite a bit of havoc. But the end brings one of the most romantic scenes ever put on the screen (with Montgomery and Evelyn Keyes), under a kind auspices of Mr. Jordan (the inimitable Claude Rains). Staging a hard competition at Oscars for 1941 powerhouses "Citizen Kane" and "How Green Was My Valley", this movie remains a lightweight treat, showing cream of the feel-good Hollywood.
