An excellent version of the classic tale
Verified purchase
Great scenery, a deft script and a very fine cast all bring this lovely tale to life. I can't imagine any small child being anything less than enchanted by this. Curiously, it seems to be a largely Irish cast with the great addition of Geraldine Chaplin as the fearsome housekeeper and Max von Sydow as a sensitive, intriguing Grandpa. Filmed in Slovenia and Wales but it all looks pretty authentically Alpine. Even the musical score is good. Loved it. Highly recommended.

Remember me Grandaughter
Verified purchase
I can’t remember, as a child, how I learnt about the story of Heidi but I knew that I loved it. I watched the film on my own and it reminded me so much of my generous, lovable and smiley granddaughter. Grandad is lonely like me and I don’t see her that often. I will be giving her this Dvd but I want to be the first person to watch and snuggle up with her. When the family move to Scotland I hope that she will also remember me whenever Heidi is read or puts the Dvd on. This version is wonderful, just as I remember the story and makes my eyes water.

Heidi's enthusiasm, hope, kindness and innocence is captivating
Verified purchase
What a delight to watch. The story captivates you with a cocktail of tragedy, misfortune, bad blood, vulnerability, unfair social structures and kindness overcoming it all.

While some try to crush her, the others have been a strong support. Unquenchable kindness helped to turn around several grumpy people (peter, grandfather, villagers etc.).

An movie not liekly to forget.

If You Buy 1 "Childrens Classic" This Year - Make This The One!
Verified purchase
Top notch cast, glorious scenery and a faithfull adaptation of a much loved classic, this version of Heidi ticks all the boxes.

Orphaned Heidi (Emma Bolger)lives with her Aunt (Pauline McLynn - Father Ted) who dumps her into the care of her unwilling Grandpa (Max Von Sydow)at his remote home in the Alps. No sooner has this winsome child charmed her way into his heart than she is taken away and "sold" to be a companion to a disabled girl, Clara, who lives in the city. Soon Heidi is weaving her innocent magic on a cold, unfeeling household run by a Housekeeper (Geraldine Chaplin), but the call of the mountains and her Grandpa cannot be ignored and it takes the wisdom of Clara's Gran (Diana Rigg) to see where the child belongs.

Perfect performances from the adults and future stars to look out for in the children, this is a delightful classic that will appeal to the whole family. Highly recommended.

Fantastic Family Film!
Verified purchase
This is truly a beautiful, heartwarming film, and one that is perfect for family viewing. I would recommend it to anybody and everybody - it's every bit as good as a Hollywood production, in fact miles better than most. My 10-year old son loves it, and still demands it be put on. We all loved it - children, parents, grandparents... It more than captures the true essence of the Heidi story, and makes it a lot more adventurous interesting than the book ever seemed, as I remember it. The music is evocative, scenery stunning and the acting brilliant. Also a lovely film to watch at Christmas time, as there are snow/sledge/carolling scenes in it. Truly brilliant - wish there were more films like this around!

Delightful film to be enjoyed by everyone
Verified purchase
An absolutely charming film that will delight the whole family. Excellent acting. I came across this film by chance after watching 'In America' and being blown away by the excellent performance of Emma Bolger. I immediately wanted to know if she had performed in other films.

Keep a box of tissues with you as you approach the end of the film - despite the happy, uplifting end. Definitely a film to enjoy with subsequent viewings and a must to purchase as opposed to renting.

I remember reading Heidi when I was a young girl and I loved it then

Had to buy this DVD. I remember reading Heidi when I was a young girl and I loved it then. Seeing all the
characters 'come to life' on screen plus, the dramatically beautiful scenery made me love it all the more.
Thank You!
