An almost painfully average superhero movie
Verified purchase
The Green Lantern movie has it's bad points and it's good points. Sadly the bad points are far too numerous and just make this an average movie.
-The casting is good
-The Acting is good
-The Script (Dialogue) is decent
- MOST of the special effects are adequate
- The action Scenes are OK
- The CGI "Creature Designs" are good, for the limited time you see them
- The Make-up effects are good

-The CGI costume is awful
- The choice of Bad Guys is disappointing, as there are by far way more interesting members of the Green Lantern "Rouges gallery" they could have used, The Manhunters for example (which they used in the bad adapted movie computer game)
- There is too much time on Hal Jordan's life on Earth and it makes the beginning of the movie drag a bit.
- There was an animated movie done around this time called Green Lantern: First Flight which was by far a better Green Lantern Movie.

If you are a fan of the source material or a fan of sci-fi you can check it out with out too much disappointment, but it is an almost painfully average film that is outclassed by an animated film that tells more of a compelling story in a far shorter running time and at a small fraction of the budget.
If you want a much better Green Lantern movie Check out "Green Lantern: First Flight" instead.

What a glorious romp...

I watched this when it first came out and thoroughly enjoyed it - so I was disappointed with the critics for panning it! Even Ryan seems a bit sheepish about it? WELL...I really, really enjoyed it second time round - fab sci-fi romp...and I just love Ryan Reynolds...he can do no wrong in my eyes!

Put off watching this movie for years as it always looked like a big disappointment, so obviously a biased viewer and, potentially, reviewer. It all just comes across very cheesy and self defeating with the story line making little impact and coming across as insubstantial whilst doing the usual reinforcing humanity's belief that it is the centre of the universe. There's also some religious undertones in there, but I got the impression that's just due to defaulting to a very base storyline... Will vs. fear. Good vs. Evil. Good wins. Humans are great. That's pretty much sums this movie up. Still... passed some time during lockdown.

Underrated and nowhere near as bad as I expected

I have only just got round to watching this due to word of mouth and reviews. I was expecting the worst film ever with shoddy special effects and lacklustre action and dialogue. And this proves why you should never listen to critics. They struck the right balance between comedy and drama and I'm saddened that there won't be a sequel. I feel there won't be a film like this again, as superhero films are evolving or just made for kids. This film was great and I was very pleasantly surprised!

Entertaining to watch on prime, but not worth purchase

Great to see a character like this get some love; however just wish there was a lot more depth to the script like we have seen in some of the more recent comic strip movies; however based on when this was made it certainly fit the genre of super hero movies at that time. Its a pity they never used their will/imagination to create something spectacular/memorable.

Maybe there will be a remake at some point...

But you have to wonder how many more super heros/villians he can play....

I will never understand why did I waste my time on this

Obviously superhero movies are not meant to artful, but they're certainly supposed to be entertaining, engaging and interesting. This one isn't, it's full of cliches, repetitive like a machine gun The only only good side are some funny Ryan's lines (and not even all), romance plot is horrible
Why that thing has 4 stars is beyond me

Unfortunately a disappointing movie

Although I do like to watch super hero movies and like DC and Marvel equally, this film I felt was overdone with cgi and underdone with storyline.

It is rather disappointing as there are some great actors in the movie, including but not limited to Ryan Reynolds, Angela Bassett, Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong.

To be honest, though I am glad I saw it but will not watch it again.

A Great Way to Spend a Rainy Sunday Afternoon

Like many others here I really don't know why this came in for such a critical panning. Yes, the CGI could have been better, but not when it was made. Yes, there are departures from comic book canon, but most viewers aren't ardent fans and won't know anything about that.
Is it a great film? No. It is, however, fun, entertaining and first-rate Saturday matinee-style fare. A little saggy due to the requirements of it being an origin movie and the exposition can be a little tedious at times, but i stress 'a LITTLE'.
Don't believe the internet (he says posting this viewpoint on the internet) and enjoy this for what it is.
