The Greatest Story Ever Told - An All-Star Cast In this Biblical Epic

 (14)
6.53 h 12 min196513+
An all-star, large scale epic movie that chronicles the life and ministry of Jesus Christ..." My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken Me?" It is towards this climactic crossroads that the story of Jesus of Nazareth leads, and to which, at the final moment, it again looks back in triumphant retrospect. It is the anguishing crossroads where the eternal questions of faith and doubt become resolved.

An Epic for its times, but the production has not transitioned well. Hammy.

Trying hard to live up to my families motto * if you can’t say anything nice, say nothing at all*, I’m trying to be positive! I’ve seen this at least twice decades ago, but thank goodness for the changes we have in modern cinema productions. The acting is so cringeworthy and hammed up, at times, almost comedic. We all know the storyline, but I don’t think today this would survive the critics, because it’s so slow. Three, plus hours which today would be edited into less than two. The scene setting, so classic high budget Hollywood but in these times be relegated to a B movie.

It is what it is, a product of its times, to be enjoyed as a Classic , by fans that love Classic movies. For me I wish I could have just kept those very fond memories of how it was then!

It’s a dilemma to star rate. For a movie so we’ll received in its times and for me very fond memories I’m going to give it 3* , for what I think today would be lucky to get 2. Why do I feel so bad?

This 1960s Biblical film, whether you enjoy it or not, is a visual spectacle made on a big budget in 2.71:1 ultra-wide screen using 70mm negatives. It was a big deal at the time and has a great cast and beautiful cinematography, and although the acting style, slow pace, music, and other aesthetics have gone out of style, the quality of production and a certain stoic intensity still come through. However, Prime Video have got their mits on a very poor and wobbly old low-resolution 4:3 TV transfer which preserves approximately one THIRD of the widescreen image and makes the whole thing look like a piece of junk. This film has been restored to its full glory and should be seen in this format.
