Came and went on big screen ... Why?

Slow burner with great cast, Matt Damon having to hold his own with heavy weights which he does. Long but well constructed with a nice twisting plotline that keeps you hooked. Love the look and feel of the periods portrayed, not sure why it has not had more acclaim but it's on my Blu-ray shelve for repeated watching.

A brilliant movie, psychological thriller, very dark
Verified purchase
Brilliant movie - very dark, literally as well as figuratively. Quite long at nearly two hours and three quarters but well worth it, with exquisite direction by Robert de Nero and wonderfully understated acting by Matt Damon. Every scene is photographic -- the dark grainy footage building up the mood and quick glances and closeups creating an overall environment of tension and distrust. This is the clandestine world of the secret services but no bombs exploding or car chases, yet it is a thriller of the first order. A day later, I find myself still shaken up.

It looked okay to begin with but after about 15 minutes the picture started to pixelate and quite ruining my viewing. I thought at first that it was filmed in such a way as to reflect the really poor reproduction standards of 1960 American television; too grainy, too much contrast, too much saturation of colour. Great to see Michael Gambon, although I didn't recognize him immediately. I would definitely watch it again if the image quality was brought up to modern day level.

In desperate need of editing
Verified purchase
Ambitious and with some good performances, but ultimately sinks under it's own length and lack of focus. There's a good film in there somewhere - had it been subject to some proper script editing resulting in the loss of about an hour of the runtime. I can't help but feel that the combination of De Niro's legendary status as an actor and his relative inexperience as a director may have contributed to the finished product getting less scrutiny than it would have done in other hands.

Good film - but lord it was slow

Good film - but lord it was slow! I had to checking I was still awake at times!
If you're watching this for the action, believe me there is little! If you are watching this for the tension then there is quite a lot of that!
The acting is very good and convincing from all players! The authenticity of the scenes and times, good too.
Would I watch this again or recommend it? In a word - No.

No Higher Praise

I recommend this as one of the best spy stories I've encountered over the past 40 years - a favourite genre of mine. In my opinion, comparable in quality with of the movie version of 'The Spy Who Came In From The Cold (the Richard Burton version of course). I can think of no higher praise.

Absolutely terrific!!!

what an amazing film. It was gripping throughout and Matt Damon plays his usual first class role. He is joined by other noteworthy characters who also add to the brilliance of this film. They are underlined by a terrific script and story line which I thoroughly enjoyed and would even consider watching again.
