The definition of underrated. Galveston is a bleak, gritty drama with crime and ‘road-trip’ movie elements. The film follows a dying hitman (Ben Foster) who escapes a set up where he encounters a young woman (Elle Fanning) who he takes with him back to his hometown of Galveston to plan his revenge. This film really hits a good niche of the genre which has produced some excellent films (see Hell Or High Water & Wind River). It’s very character focused and these are complex and flawed characters and the performances are brilliant. Ben Foster gives probably the best performance I’ve seen of his, his character Roy is depressed, tired and suffering with illness yet he still carries on through it, Fanning also gives a great performance, with her character contrasting against Foster’s as she tries to remain upbeat and optimistic despite the situation, however it’s the more dramatic and intense scenes where she takes her character to a new level and the scenes where there is conflict or intensity are brutal yet extremely engaging due to the acting. There is some tense realistic violence and shootouts, with some great camerawork. The cinematography is excellent throughout and the film keeps a consistent tone and pace. I do wish it was a bit longer so these characters could get even more development, the start of the film is definitely more rushed and a bit jumpy but when it hits its stride it continues it brilliantly. An underrated film that I definitely recommend. I rented it on Amazon and will now be buying the DVD.

Imo, one of the best films in 2018, a well crafted film with great perfomances all around, blu ray transfer is not 100% but works nicely enough.

Not a fluffy upbeat action movie. Whew.
This was one of the best films I have seen in a while. Its bleak, its gritty and the acting is outstanding. Elle Fanning is as usual, magnetic on screen, and Ben Foster dark and moody and of course tortured and playing the quandary so well. Not for everyone, definitely not your mainstream mediocre viewing, but if you like a deep and unsettling film with flawed characters, this is it.
