This film got a lot of poor reviews, mainly I think because the critics don't like John Travolta. He's good in this. He comes across as a rather obnoxious wiseass but that's the character he's playing. The film is a very compressed and simplified version of the subtle, nuanced and complex novel on which it's based, and can't resist going for big visual scenes which don't appear in the book, but that's the movies for you. Also great soundtrack which enhances the steamy, Deep South atmosphere. Why don't they film more of de Mille's great books?

THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER BLURAY from PARAMOUNT RELEASED 28 JUNE 2021

A just released BLURAY of a pretty good thriller. Good BluRay quality, though I, again, feel not much better than a really good DVD. Excellent sound (don't you just love helicopters??). Good subtitles and bars top and bottom make this a visual/sound feast. Extras not seen by me. A somewhat "heavier" Travolta is just right as a military investigator, supported by the always excellent Madeleine Stowe as his co-investigator. A strong cast including James's Cromwell and Woods help the plot run smoothly along a few twisty trails. Plenty of action, some good dialogue (particularly a scene with JT and Woods), make this a film better than some thrillers of the periopd (or any period). Thoughtful, tough and with a good "whodunnit" element. Recomended, but it is 18 cert so be warned of sexual violence and language.

I had not heard of this film and cannot understand why. One of the best films that I have seen. Good twists that keep you wondering to the end.
Travolta played a very good part. James Woods was well cast.
Watch it. You won"t be wasting your time.

A Gripping watch

Excellent performances from all the cast but I particularly thought that John Travolta’s portrayal of the military cop was exceptional. Suspense, Intrigue and some lighter moments what more do you need.

A must see.

Very good, very exciting. An insight into future roles played by Travolta (e.g. "The Taking of Pelham 123").
