Good ideas and bad acting

Considering what most 'Frankenstein' movies are like, this one (originally a TV pilot) could actually have been very good. The idea of a monster stealing human parts has been done before but this time it's woven into a larger situation; if this had been picked up as a series, it could have gone down a number of interesting paths. As much as I loved the original X-Files, it generally wasn't an overtly intelligent show whereas 'Frankenstein' tried to tackle a number of interesting themes like spirituality, freewill and what it takes to be a person.

Unfortunately, Parker Posey is terrible in her role. In recent years she has shown that she can be a fantastic actress, but she has always been capable of bad acting too (eg 'Superman Returns'). Another reviewer pointed out a scene where she holds and fires a shotgun - she handles it like it's a ticking bomb. Hilarious! Adam Goldberg is another odd choice for this but he handles his character a little better. Furthermore, the writing is generally good but there's a few awkward scenes - note to writers: people who've just been attacked don't usually use phrases like 'find your bliss' :)

If you feel like you can overlook these bad elements, 'Frankenstein' is an intriguing watch for fans of horror, sci-fi and writers who want to see how to (and not to) introduce adult themes in an accessible way.

I really enjoyed this Frankenstein series but I'm no film or TV pundit,it definitely had a similar look and feel as that great movie "seven" with Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey

An entertaining curiousity

Where to begin? First off I did like the movie as a whole - there were just too many parts that irritated me for me to give this 5 stars. I liked Frankenstein's monster, Ducalcian (or something like that) and seeing what Dr Frankenstein was up to these days was fun.
The problem was the rest of the cast. While they all gave good enough performances I just didn't like Parker Posey as the 'tough' female detective (it got ridiculously unbelievable when one scene required her to run with a heavy shotgun and it really looked out of place in her hands, even when she shot it she just didn't seem like she could handle it, even though she was literally handling it right in front of me) and I started to hate her sarcastic, dry witted partner which was unusual because I normally love those kinds of characters. The main 'bad guy' Michael Madson, I've seen in several other movies and I don't think I've ever seen him act any differently, regardless of who he is playing.
Because this was meant to be a pilot for a tv show, it doesn't have the budget effects of a movie and it would probably have been a B movie anyway, but it's still good and the atmosphere of the movie is good throughout.
If you can get it cheap, it's certainly worth a look but if you're a hardcore fan of the books, probably best to steer clear. I read the books after watching this and the books are far superior in terms of quality story telling and character development.
