3.0 out of 5 stars What’s not to like?
By The glow in the dark on 9 September 2020
According to Wiki ‘Fjallraven’ is an ‘Upscale’ brand and judging by their prices, I’d say that their ‘wears’ were definitely aimed at the luxury end of the market. I purchased this Vidda Pro jacket on sale ( at well under half price ) and I still feel it was exorbitantly priced. Therefore, I’m hoping it’s a ‘jacket for life’. The sizing was a gamble, as Fjallraven make it extremely tricky to gauge their clothes sizing online. Their sizing charts are difficult to navigate and no single store seems to have figured out, how to help you out, from this Fjallraven sizing maze. ( To try in person at a ‘bricks-n-mortar’ might be the best advice? ) I plumped for Medium, after reading various buyer reviews ( some said size-up, but most said size down ) I usually wear a Large, but the Fjallraven’s ‘Medium’ is what I would call a man’s ‘large’ ( it’s 56cm, or 22.2” inches Pit-to-Pit ) With plenty of room to wear another layer if you wanted to? The fabric ( G1000 ) is supposedly renowned for it’s quality. Yet, it’s just a Polyester (65% ) Cotton ( 35% ) blend. In the mid-sixties when the original material ( initially intended for tents ) was used to make outdoor clothing, the buyer probably marvelled at the technological wizardry of adding wax to ‘waterproof’ their garment. That Fjallraven hold onto this ‘charming nostalgia’ and ‘authenticity of its branding’ is odd and you’ve to ask yourself why? In todays market every brand offers ‘waterproofing’ as standard. Buying a ( RRP ) two hundred and sixty pound outdoor jacket and it’s not waterproof is bizarre? I went out in normal UK late summer drizzle with this jacket and got soaked. If nostalgia and tradition are so very important to Fjallraven, why did they move production from Scandinavia to Asia, when also doggedly selling us their commitment to nostalgia and tradition? So why keep this proprietary material and not invent a new waterproof version of it? Apart from the price and the jacket not keeping out ‘some light rain’ …and if you are affluent enough to afford its high cost, there’s also the issue with pockets. All in-depth reviews state this jacket is loaded with pockets. My issue is, that whilst there may be a plethora of outside pockets, none are that deep and no pocket is of a proper ‘bellows’ design. ( Even if the Fjallraven site for some reason claims this? ) You can fit a map, possibly a small paperback, or a notebook, but that’s about it. I had a British high street ‘own branded’ waterproof jacket that had hand-pockets you could stash a three litre of bottled water in, or even a ‘size two’ football. Good luck with carrying anything with you in this jacket, that isn’t squarely flat and thin and shaped like a map? Fjallraven suggest a small knife, “kept close at hand with attached inside pocket loops” and possibly a pair of gloves. They probably think… what else would an outdoorsy bloke need? Some reviewers also stated that it was a pity that there weren’t any internal pockets. I agree, what feels safer to you, than having a few internal pockets to store your valuables - Yet the jacket has none? This extremely thin, yet lightweight jacket will not keep the cold out and you’d need to layer up, if the temperature dipped. I went for the Dark Grey-Black version, which looks ‘Dark-Green and Black ‘in Fjallraven’s product photos, but in reality, it’s just a Dark Grey. The hoods OK, if only it were also waterproof …and the metallic zippers seem to work OK. To recap, it’s expensive, it’s not waterproof, it’s thin, won’t keep the cold out and the brand is a sham selling itself as Scandinavian and yet making their clothes in China. So if in the market for a new outdoor jacket, try the Fjallraven Vidda Pro Jacket… what’s not to like?
