Brilliant Romance/World War Two Movie. One of Ralph Fiennes best films.

I hadn't seen this movie for years and still only owned it on video. I read the reviews on amazon and this persuaded me to buy the blu ray over the dvd on what is a fairly old movie now. The blu ray picture is pretty good. Not one of the best, but on a decent 4k television it will upscale the picture and with an advanced picture setting it looks good. The sound is very good and displays the fantastic soundtrack of the film. There are some fine actors in this movie, Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas, Willem Dafoe, Juliette Binoche, Colin Firth and Naveen Andrews. Anthony Mingella was a brilliant director of this and The Talented Mr Ripley, and is sorely missed. It is one of the most beautifully filmed movies you will see, with a love story/affair, the Second World War in Africa, an engrossing plot and a first rate music score. I will certainly be watching this again soon. It scores on so many levels and is a classic.

Realism with sublime aesthetic management, worth it just for the music

After months of subscribing and trying we finally got to watch a movie from Prime video on our TV in France. A beautiful production, The English Patient. We were elated - even though it had taken a stressful call to Customer Service to achieve - stressful for elderly customers that is. Our attempt to watch another quality movie the next day failed totally and we were back at square 1. We shall not try again unless our nerve and energy return

Anthony Minghella's masterpiece hypnotically draws you in on the first frame to the last, with composer Gabriel Yared's music and master cinematographer John Seale, A.C. S, creating a film that will live forever in the heart and soul of anyone who has seen it <3. Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas' characters are beautiful souls forever bound by love's eternal grace. Juliette Binoche is heartbreakingly human, vulnerable, dealing with constant loss, yet ultimately strengthened by all that she's experienced. An unsurpassed romantic masterpiece <3.

I read the book forst as am a fan of the author so had my critical glasses very much on the end of the nose when I watched this but it's a tour de- force.
The cinematography is incredible and the acting is sublime by an excellent cast, neatly echoing the repression of the times and the mounting tension as war erupts in North Africa and lforbidden love follows its fatefull course....

Minghella's masterpiece

This is my favourite film. Such a sad story, it holds all human qualities. Concerning, friendship, love and betrayal, floating each in turn. Wonderful scenic and artistic photography. Exquisite casting and acting. There is cold mutilation, deliberate cruelty alongside selfless devotion, kindness and soaring passion. Brilliance and sadness personified.

Self indulgent and boring
Verified purchase
The only people who this will entertain are people who are hoping for that. I thought it lacked in various arenas and it shows that a good cast does not necessarily make a good film. It’s the sort of movie that one would be expected to be in raptures about I’m sure, but I found it a self indulgent bore and need a tonic to lift my spirits. Might watch Game of Thrones again. Clever, witty and engaging!

Great Film still after 25 years stands up very well

Hadn't seen this since it was first out in the early 90s, but is still such a well made film that it would stand alongside films of 2019 very well, and would probably still pick up most if not all of the Oscars that it did when it was first released. A good story well told and worth watching again, even if you do know how it ends!

Perfect and beautiful!

This may be one of the most perfect and beautiful films I have ever seen. I have seen this film many times and love it every time. The cast, the acting, the music, the script, the story line are all outstanding. I am a sucker for landscapes, planes, violins and the piano. The photography is wonderful. This film has is it all plus love, sorrow, passion, betrayal, happiness and heartache. Who could ask for more? One of my favourite films. I will watch this again and again.
