Don’t think Independence Day or Mars Attacks...think along the lines of Cocoon and the Abyss. This isn’t the usual aliens coming to colonise the earth or to farm the human race. This is more the peaceful alien, the knowledge and wisdom giver, a bit of a Yoda without the Jedi skills and somersaults. I really liked this different take on our friends from the stars, the ending was without giving it away in the very least thought provoking. Good acting from all, the other Hemsworth is showing he might not be as pumped up as his brother, yet, he is a competent actor. Anyways, a very good movie for the alternate sci-fi fan

Recycle a Corpse Alien style!

As far as cliff hanging edge of seat nail biters go , this one does nothing of the kind, it's a bit Paul the Alien and The Blob mixed together in a sort of invasion of the body snatchers finale. a paraplegic who can miraculously walk again but then gets dropped back to the floor several times throughout the movie. FBI are portrayed as moronic retards with boom boom sticks. a good story line but weak acting by the cast, very interesting ideas though and makes a change from Aliens visit earth, Aliens kill humans, humans beat Aliens all go have apple pie ending type of movie. worth a look though, and not so long a movie that you get bored too often. Four Stars ****

Low budget but intriguing movie

Well this was unexpected. I grew up in the 80s so have watched my fair share of low budget movies. Funnily enough one of my absolute favourites is Starcrossed (1985). Encounter might not have a big budget or A List cast but its quite the feature. Think a cross between Body Snatchers, Starman and Cocoon.

The FBI agents aren't the best (dialogue or acting), though I'm so used to seeing Mulder and Scully that it could easily have been an X Files. The rest of the cast are fine, however.

Special effects feel like they've come from the 1980s but that's okay, I'm not a huge fan of CGI anyway.

So the story. A group of guys witness an object crash in a field at night, it turns out to be some kind of space rock. However, it's quite the remarkable object and requires physical contact with these men and their friends. In the meantime, two FBI agents are on the case.

The conclusion is quite emotional and thought provoking for such a simple movie. With a bigger budget and all star cast it could easily have been a GREAT movie! As it stands, it's nice and not too long. It requires patience, because it's not your typical alien invasion feature. Think of something unearthly, reaching out to humanity, learning about us. In turn, we can learn about it.

It also shows us that miracles can come in all forms. We just need to believe, and take that leap of faith.

Haha....if you don't mind the original Star Trek type aliens, then give it a watch

Awww....I was disappointed with this movie. I would give it 2.5/5
Barring Luke Hemsworth's character, and the old professor, non of the characters were likable. So much so infact, that I nearly turned it off after the first 15 minutes. The acting was dreadful, and the storyline should have really been an episode of The X Files, rather than an entire movie. The storyline was very bizarre, with a totally unexpected ending. The special effects came right out of the original Star Trek series!! Haha!

If you want to watch this, don't read any spoilers, because the whole point of this movie, was the ending.....and I must admit, it did get me crying!!

I miss out on a lot of good Sci-fi movies, because the majority of them contain violence/gore/horror, which I don't like.
This movie has none of that.

So if you're willing to watch a creature feature with a difference, then give it a go.

An enjoyable ride

There are "alien invasion" movies and then there are movies like this. Every now and then an SF filmmaker has an actually interesting concept, and even more rarely does it get a B-film budget, and hardly ever does it get an A-film budget. This film has a great concept, a story that has enough substance to make you want to see how it all ends and enough of a surprise ending to leave you with a satisfied feeling. Although there is a bit of cheese in some scenes there is always enough mystery or edginess to never become cheesy. The screenplay is a little clunky here and there, as are some of the dialogues. The FBI agents didn't bother me, they're not all that important and serve their purpose well. I enjoyed the whole runtime of the film and am very pleased this was part of my Prime subscription.

I gave this film 5 Stars because those who made this film made a GREAT old school horror movie, you know, one of those old B movies we all love and adore from the '80s. Well, these guys did a great job of making a modern b rated horror. LOL, you gotta watch this, it will surprise you...If you would like to take a modern trip down memory lane.
