A very good ol skol comedy 'monster movie'.

My teenage son was starting to get scared of house spiders, so I bought this for him to put it in perspective.

He used to love the Transformers/ Godzilla/Power Rangers 'giant monsters' style stories. We've watched this together a couple of times over the past week, and its a great movie! I saw it back in the day when it first came out and I was surprised how well its stood the test of time - the effects are still very good - and its a classic comcal/monster/smalltown style movie. Sort of reminds me of THEM! and Empire Of The Ants, but with spiders, of course.

My son is no longer scared of the tiny spiders in our house. Should he encounter a giant 6 foot long spider it may be a different story though ......

And I should add I am not a Doctor, this review is not medical advice and this move should probably not be used to treat Arachnophobia. (Having clarified that important point, my next movie purchase will definitely be an Arachnophobia DVD for us).

This 2002 comedy horror hasn't really dated at all and is just as enjoyable now as when it was first released. This is not a film to be taken seriously it's a sort of homage to all those 1950-1960's low budget B movie films that supported the main feature in the glory days of cinema.
The plot is not original -it's not intended to be, a container of waste falls into a local pond and pollutes the water supply. This has dreadful effects on the local spider farm -as it would, causing the itsy bitsy spiders to grow ever so large and eventually break free to unleash a reign of terror on the nearby population. Realism goes out the window -along with most other sensible things, as the local sheriff [single mom Kari Wuhrer] and ex boyfriend [David Arquette] try to defeat the menace.
This film isn't a horror in the true sense of the word nor is it an outright comedy, it's more of a tongue in cheek humorous look at a bizzare situation. There are a few moments which can make you jump -especially if you hate spiders and there are parts that could make you laugh out loud but it generally borders on that 'it's so bad it's good' type of movie that makes you smile a lot.
Who can watch the jumping spiders chasing the bikers or the Ostritch's disappearing on the Ostrich farm without smiling? Or see
Tom Noonan as the seemingly inept exotic spider farmer -Joshua, who is so absorbed in his hobby that he remains oblivious to the dangers leaving it to the sheriffs son Mike (Scott Terra) to try to raise the warning, but as he says 'Who listens to a kid?',
The disc itself has a number of extras including a soundtrack in English, Italian or French with subtitles inmost European languages, Arabic and Castellano! There are the obligatory theatrical trailer & scene selection, but it also has the short film 'Larger than Life' which inspired this movie, Additional Scenes which is basically the alternate start and ending and finally a few cast and crew style commentaries. Unfortunately there's no spider directory or special effect stuff here which is a bit of a disappointment since the special effects are mostly very good.
Anyway, this is a good old fashioned 'family' movie as it doesn't rely on swearing, sex or over the top violence to get by. Definitely recommended, just pull up the footrest, get out the popcorn [and your favourite tipple if you wish] and sit back to be entertained.

Don't take it at all seriously and you'll have a load of fun!

Too many people have under-rated this movie; it appears that they wanted it to be a serious scary horror movie; They probably thought "Pearl Harbour" was a documentary..

The movie takes the piss out of itself and similar movie themes - from the kid who says "why would people listen to me, people never listen to the kid" to the spiders going "ow! Ow! Ow" as it slides down the wire after the guy..

Add in a hottie sheriff who is hot enough to not need to display it (unlike the usual bimbo-type 'hotties' who are just boobs and bum and no personality), a likeable hero, a lickable sheriff's daughter.. and, did I say? a FUN concept.

No, it's not "Scary Movie" type funny, that slapstick fake-humour.. it's a LOT BETTER.

And the ending? "Wow.. they've got cocoons!!" Great fun!

Monster movie played for laughs

Well filmed, well acted - which is not always true for creature-features.

Spoiled by the silly "voices" of the spiders as they get destroyed
-- apart from this it was entertaining

Three film compilation
Verified purchase
This is a review of the three film compilation that features Ai, eight legged freaks, and Time machine. Three great films, however, the three films come with their own cases placed in a cardboard box. Which is quite disappointing because if you already have any of these films theres no point to this compilation as it takes up more shelf space. if only Amazon could point such things out.
