This does not hold true for precharged batteries
Here is a little information about NiMH batteries:
Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries lose charge quickly (20% per month, although newer designs have reduced this to about 2-3%) but are not harmed by storage in a discharged state; the only danger is that they will eventually lose electrolyte through evaporation, but this will take a long time since they are sealed. If a multi-cell nickel-based battery is stored with an electrical load attached, it is also likely that one or more cells will reverse polarity, which causes permanent damage. But if the unused battery is not connected to anything, it will probably be fine after four years if it is fully discharged and then recharged after storage.
best case 2 - 3 % per month for 4 years... lets be generous and say they only lose 1.5% a month. That means every month another 1.5% is depleted and this happens 48 times in 4 years, thats 72% discharged and over long periods of storage, batteries can lose electrolyte through evaporation as stated above.
I bought the 4 hour charger with 4 batteries on 13th June 2020 and the pack I received was from 2016, meaning they had sat there discharging in the manner stated above for the past 4 years...
I'm not at all surprised at some of the negative reviews of various charger & battery products purchased that were not up to the standard of "new" batteries - the above information on NiMH batteries is relevant to these negative reviews.
"Probably" being ok after 4 years of discharging on a shelf and requiring a full discharge and subsequent recharge to full in the hope that they are still adequately servicable is not acceptable when buying a supposedly NEW product.
Check the back of the pack you receive for the date if you do decide to purchase and consider the information about NiMH batteries, and then decide for yourself whether the risk of getting discharge damaged or plain knackered batteries that have sat there for several years is acceptable to you or not.
If this is not acceptable, return them and buy from somewhere you can check the packaging to see how "new" the batteries are or have an employee check for you before purchase to be sure you are actually getting batteries that are not already years old.
I hope this information is useful to others considering buying batteries online.
So it appears that either these are faulty (unlikely) or they are not really Duracell - but that's impossible to tell. They also feel lighter than regular D batteries - maybe that's a clue. So buyer beware...
I have just opened one up - the cavity is just partly filled with a wound substance - they are not rechargeable batteries at all. My guess is that they are shipped with a certain charge, and when it runs out - that's it.

HOWEVER, the rechargeable battery pack purchased has had minimal use yet has still abruptly stopped working.
Build quality = 4/10
The Charger I had was quite noisy due to the fan, very annoying. Alongside this, it would take quite some time to actually charge the batteries, and so the noise issue is prolonged.
Noise = 2/10
Charge time - 4/10
Its great to actually use rechargeable batteries, and can save time and money in the long run, However, bare in mind slow charge times and the ability to only charge 4 batteries at a time could become an annoyance you would rather avoid by buying single-use batteries. Faster charger times would help.
Practicality = 5/10
Duracell Battery charger = 3.75/10
Apparently, there is a 15 year warranty? If so and actually something that will be honored then it may be worth the risk of chancing your luck and hoping you dont get a dud.
I just got fed up of trying to find one that worked. I mentioned to my hubby that we needed to get new phones because these were driving me crazy. He said we don’t need new phones just new batteries!
It would have been nice to have this information earlier. Seriously. Sometimes I think he must just like listening to me moan.
So I ordered these and it’s like having four new phones. I left one hanging around for five days and it was only down one third.
