 (914)
6.61 h 37 min199915
In the small town of Mount Rose, Minnesota, a teen beauty pageant is about to unleash a fury of very unladylike behaviour. For in this contest, going after the crown is an all-out war where you win any way you can... or die trying. A wickedly twisted, razor sharp satire, starring Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Barkin, Oscar Winner Allison Janney, Oscar Nominee Amy Adams, Brittany Murphy and Denise Richards.

I used to have this on DVD way, way back in time but hadn’t seen the film in years.

But it’s still a riotously funny beauty pageant satire absolutely stacked with familiar faces everywhere the camera turns. It’s absolutely merciless in its mockumentary approach to the dark side of all things pageant related and yet all the actual characters are so likeable (even the ones who should be impossible to), with virtually every role played perfectly from Denise Richards and Kirsten Dunst, down to the smaller roles played by a pre stardom Amy Adams and the late Brittany Murphy. But you also have great turns from Kirstie Alley, Ellen Barkin and Alison Janney, etc

As others have noted, it would never be made today, not this way, but as another, less well seen, example of that 1999 ‘Greatest Year in Cinema Ever’, ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’ still holds a place. It’s also criminal this film doesn’t have a proper special edition Blu-ray to actually buy. But I could say that about a ton of movies…..

Subversive. Offensive. AMAZING!

One of my all time favourite cult classic movies from 1999.

Love the entire cast of the film, they play the dark and subversive humour very well.

Kirsten Dunst is a great lead but for me the stars of the film are Allison Janney, Kirstie Alley and Ellen Barkin.

22 years on and this film still manages to make me laugh with ‘Mount Rose, Minnesota’ being used as a regular phrase between me and some friends to describe where we are from!

Star-studded, amusingly irreverent look at teen pageantry in America...

Its an old-ish (1999) film which takes an irreverent look at America's teen pageantry and to some degree small town America and American life and culture in general. I found it amusing but not riotously funny. Its filled with now famous celebrities. OK on a first watch if you don't mind something a little different.

I love St Paul Pork Products!

If you haven't seen this movie, you need to! So un-PC and dark in tone, I doubt it would be made today, but it wouldn't be anywhere as good a movie without it. Nice to finally have a release in widescreen (the original DVD release was 4:3 fullscreen) now we just need a Blu-ray!

One Of The Very Best Satires On The 'American Dream'

Hilarious [but definitely not PC so be warned]. Brimming with talent. Continuously pokes fun at middle America and steam rolls American 'exceptionalism'. A classic.

Wonderfully dark comedy
Verified purchase
Filmed as a 'mockumentary', this dark comedy is full of great performances from an amazing cast (look out for Alison Janney as man-eating trailer trash Loretta) , biting one liners and some brilliant observational comedy that brilliantly lampoons American pageant culture. Recommended to anyone who likes their comedy dark, or fans of mocumentaries such as Spinal Tap or Best in Show.

Although this had some funny moments it is has little substance and was quite juvenile. The best thing about it was the music.
