Detachment

Season 1
 (13)
202013+
Detachment is a remotely filmed international web-series which takes an anthology-style approach in a time of crisis, a time where the world is falling apart at the seams. This looks at how different people deal with that. We open in the midst of an ongoing event but we jump about the timeline as we build the story of this falling race.

Hope Series 2 is better!
I am all for supporting local filmmakers, and I was looking forward to watching this after seeing the buzz it was getting from local sources...but this was disappointing.

I will give it this, it's less than an hour to binge the entire thing and the fact that the show was all organised/made during lockdown is inspiring, but that's it in terms of praise.

My main issue is the editing, in particular the inconsistent sound design. I can look past the inconsistent camera quality but the fact that the theme song that opens and closes each episode is ten times louder than the dialogue was a huge turn off. I could never get into the show because my finger was always on the volume button, awaiting the true horror of this "horror" anthology, the music.

I could look past all of these flaws if there was a gripping story and compelling characters that kept me invested...sadly there was none of that. The whole thing felt like a series of student films. Not a single memorable scene or line of dialogue because it was all just back and forth of characters spewing exposition to each other. It would be fine if this show was just a free web series on YouTube, but it isn't! At least I didn't have to pay for it.

However, after saying all of that, I am hopeful for series 2. I see that it has reached it's goal on Indiegogo and I hope they put that money to good use- at least hire an editor that can keep the audio levels consistent.

Was this made on PowerPoint?
I'd say there isn't a single redeemable thing about this but then again, they've managed to make fart jokes funny with that fart during an argument scene as the director themselves sits down in episode 6. Was everything just one take? Wouldn't surprise me. Sums up the 'series' pretty well too, a fart in the wind. I get it was no budget, but that doesn't excuse that there is seemingly no direction at all, I don't think the makers had any idea what it was supposed to be about, until they crowdfunded and thought what's the lowest common denominator for an idea? This is about zombies now I suppose. WIT?! Woeful in every sense, from acting to sound to script, if there even was one that is. Best part had to be episode 2 though, I would genuinely recommend at least watching that, it's only 2 minutes and is some of the funniest stuff I've seen in 2020, and with a bizarre 'twist' that had my girlfriend and I in hysterics, much like the left in fart. Got to add too that the director must surely be aware of the continued misleading of people on various Scottish Film Facebook groups of how Amazon are "on board" for S2. They allow anything to be uploaded, it's the equivalent of uploading a video on YouTube of someone pissing against a wall and saying, "Internet giants YouTube are on board for man pissing against a different wall". Anyone can upload on here, and this shows that really shouldn't be the case.

Abysmal
I wish I could detach this from my memory. Quite a waste of time. Interesting concept but very badly executed.

Good Stuff😛
Great little series. This was a bunch of creatives getting together during lockdown, and self filming their parts. Impressive piece of work and looking forward to Series 2.
