How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat machine, good value for money!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2019
*** Overview ***
This is a great machine for those who want coffee drinks with real milk, but without a lot of faff.
It is low-maintenance, and seems fairly sophisticated. It makes all the usual milk and non-milk drinks, like espresso, cappucino (foamed milk) and cafe latte (more milk, unfoamed). The selection is straightforward (there are six buttons, one per drink), and if you find your cup is too small you can abort the drink by pressing the button again.
Also, if you want more milk (or just want to make a hot milk drink with no coffee), there is a button for that, press it and it will provide hot milk until you press it again.

*** Highlights ***
For me, the three key highlights are:
* Makes milk and non-milk drinks
* Very small! about the width of a 2-slice toaster
* Easy to clean; no scrubbing!

*** How does it work? ***
The main body of the machine has a removable water container at the back, for tap water but I use volvic. The reservoir holds enough water for perhaps half a dozen drinks.
The coffee cup is placed in front (there is a slideable platform for shorter cups) and you insert the coffee capsule at the top. When you close the lever, it pierces the capsule. Press a button and the water is heated and forced through the capsule, and voila!
For milk drinks like cappucino, then the supplied milk reservoir system is connected to the front body of the machine. When unused, it can be disconnected and placed in the fridge, to keep the milk fresh. More detail on the milk reservoir system mechanics below, under the 'Cleaning' heading.

*** Programming ***
There is no display, just button and alert LEDs, so initial setup stuff (like volumes of drinks, water hardness, and power-off options) is all set up using button combinations and observing the LEDs. It's not as nice as a real display, but thankfully you'll only need to do it once.

*** Performance ***
The machine initializes and heats up rapidly - far quicker than the time it takes me to fetch the cups and put some sugar in them. During operation it makes some noise, but not excessively loud.
Froth level is adjustable. The drinks come out hot, and it does a great job with setting the milk texture automatically for cappucino versus latte. I get fantastic-looking drinks out of this machine - presentation is half of the drink!
And they taste great too - I'm still discovering my favourites.
No-one here refuses a coffee any more - goodbye instant coffee from Tesco.
I deliberately went for this EN560 machine rather than the older similar-ish EN550, so that performance/reliability should not optimized - I don't like going for a revision 1 machine!

*** Cleaning ***
I've had several Nespresso machines in the past, including the ones with a separate milk frother. I always felt those machines were a faff, because it needed the warm milk washing out, and the stirrer inside would get milky and hard to clean too - yuk.
With this De'Longhi machine, it's so much better. The separate milk container system can be unplugged from the main body of the machine, and stored in the fridge! The milk does NOT get heated in the container, so no need to throw away unused milk.. just leave the container in the fridge, and make another coffee whenever you want to.
From what I can tell, the way the milk system works, is that the main body of the machine forces very hot water vapour, under pressure, into the top portion of the detachable milk system through a nozzle. The pressure causes milk to get sucked up through a tube, and it then rapidly gets hot due to the vapour heat, and gets pushed through the egress tube and into the coffee cup. This means that the only components that touch milk, are the milk container system. The main body of the machine doesn't need milk cleaning.

If you have a dishwasher, then the milk container system need cleaning every couple of days. I didn't want to use the dishwasher, so in that case a manual clean is needed every day. The nice thing is, it's really easy. It doesn't take a lot of time, and no scrubbing to remove hot milk either!

All that needs to be done, is to disassemble the milk reservoir components (into the milk container, the tube and nozzle, and knob all separate easily), rinse under tap water briefly, and then chuck into a tank with warm water with a bit of fairy liquid mixed. Leave that for half an hour, and then remove, rinse and dry. Even for a guy, that is not a faff at all.

Annoyingly no tank is supplied for the cleaning. However, this one (small, 102x292x89mm) works great (see the photo) and costs just 5.99:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004D8YYSE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is worth getting that tank, because it is also useful for any future descaling.

*** Descaling ***
I've not needed to descale so far. The machine will automatically alert when that is needed. I'm in a hard water area (a hardness test strip is supplied with the machine) however I don't trust Thames Water quality and so I just use Volvic.. that is soft, so descaling will be extremely infrequent. You'll need a descaling kit from nespresso's website (it is silly that Amazon won't allow me to provide a link for that) for that. The descaling should be infrequent, so I won't be buying the descaling kit until I need it.

*** Cups! ***
Not that it's important, any cups will do.. I'm using these double-walled cups..
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00076ZD22/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

they don't necessarily keep the drink warm much longer (a lid would be far more effective than a double wall) but at least they keep the hands cool.

*** Summary ***
I'm really happy with this purchase. The machine seems reliable, well-built, I'm expecting many years of good service.
I'm very pleased that this machine is low-maintenance. Everyone loves the drinks it produces.

1.0 out of 5 starsAvoid this machine!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 May 2019
I was sold on the easy to use, easy to clean story and it is anything but. The instructions on all the buttons aren't clear and the amounts of milk / coffee it spits out are totally random - you may get a 1/2 cup or it might overflow.

The worst part is cleaning it, you spend more time cleaning up than making or drinking coffee! The marketing says it's easy to clean the bits in the dishwasher, but that's only some of it, you still have to take fiddly bits off and clean them by hand. The machine constantly lights up the "clean" warning where you have to put a spare cup under the spout and blow a load of noisy steam through it - more washing. Furthermore the coffee spout constantly drips and there isn't a removable drip tray to catch it in, so you need to keep a cloth handy to keep mopping up. Now the "descale" light has come on too (after only 2 months) and the machine has only ever had bottled water in so it can't have any limescale.

This is such a poor design and I wish I hadn't bought it. The one with the detachable round milk frother is WAY better and I'd swap it out any day. Unfortunately, I missed the return cut off with Amazon so I'm stuck with this thing now.

3.0 out of 5 stars LATISSIMA v CITIZ. Prefer Citiz
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 May 2020
Colour Name: Dark GreyVerified Purchase
Our daughter bought the Citiz which makes perfect coffee AND perfect, thick, foam. The Nespressp Citiz never disappoints.
So we decided to buy a Nespresso but checked Amazons other options. We paid nearly £300 and chose the Latissima, it has more specs and we thought it would be even better than the Citiz, It isn't.

For us, making a gorgeous cup of coffee has, so far, been hit & miss to get the right amount of foam. If we get the right settings each time, the results are excellent. The Latissima also has the capacity to make more than 1 cup at a time because it has a milk container attached which holds enough for up to 4 cups. The milk volume works auto to the settings.
As we are retired and only need 1 or 2 cups, we find the settings too long winded. Likewise cleaning brittle, plastic fittings, clean & replace.

The Citiz is simpler and cheaper. The machine makes a hot coffee of choice first, while you would pour the cold milk into the separate milk container. Remove cup of hot coffee and put aside. Place the milk container into the coffee maker for just a few seconds. The machine makes the cold milk very warm and frothy. We pour and spoon the thick foam onto the mug of coffee.
I've never cleaned the Citiz machine but washing the milk container at the same time as my empty cup is easy enough.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this machine
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 January 2021

I realise this is likely to be one bad review amongst many positive ones. To be honest, I think I’ve just been unlucky. I bought this machine in October 2020 and by December 2020 the milk frother wasn’t working. I called nespresso and the first assistant I spoke to said they would get it repaired but could I try and clean/soak the milk frother unit one last time. I did that and called back a different day and got a different agent. She said she would send a replacement milk frother. This took a while to arrive. When it arrived I cleaned it before using and it worked for one coffee cup only. I called a third time and spoke to an agent who talked me through various tests to try. We got the machine to work but the hot water seems to be filling up the capsule and drip tray for some reason. The agent wanted me to try a test with a nespresso pod (rather than an Amazon own brand coffee pod). He sent me a small box of pods which I have received. I am at the stage where I’m going to ask them to replace or refund me for this machine. It’s been such a headache.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good, but needs a lot of work and a lot of improving
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 January 2021

Got the machine a a good deal price on prime day an loved it at first. But soon (sooner than expected) came to cleaning, which took SO much time and was VERY expensive, Nespresso recommend their own most expensive cleaner I have ever seen. The cleaning process which is advertised as simple, is actually horrible, it's fiddly, takes AGES and get's thrown at you with no notice, normally when you have guests who want coffee. It's not worth it for that and also the upgrade to touch buttons is terrible, always registering my sleeve and squirting hot water or hot milk all over the place, dangerous and annoying (you need a really awkward sized tray to drain when cleaning and this isn't included), the mess and damage this machine has caused in my new kitchen is soul draining. The buttons have no writing and overcomplicate using the machine, it's just symbols that are difficult to decode (grey can be coffee, white can be milk, but they can also swap around so you never know what's coming out until it does and you waste more pods). It's a box of plastic, could be much better quality for the price. The water dispenser leaks water randomly even hours after using, so often find a flooded worktop, damaging kitchen cupboard underneath. For a product priced at over £200 just to make coffee and made by such a famous brand, I am disappointed. Next time I will order another brand. As much as it is nice to have a good coffee, I would recommend avoiding this item just due to the hassle and stress involved in using and cleaning it. They know how to makes things sound good, but the product does NOT match the advertising.

1.0 out of 5 stars Newer cheaper machine, watery coffee
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 May 2021
Colour Name: WhiteVerified Purchase
I have 3 of these with them all being the older model, 3 buttons on the left for coffee and 3 buttons on the right for milk based coffee, this new machine has a different button configuration and the coffee it make is noticeably hotter..... Now here is the problem, the older version of this is hands down the best milk based coffee machine which basically does it for you with the milk container rather than steaming the milk yourself, the old model makes creamy lattes my spoon will stand up in that have a rich, creamy smooth texture, it's amazing :-) now this one that's a newer, cheaper and clearly different machine in the same outer case makes watery hot lattes that have the texture of dirty dish water, I know that sounds a bit harsh but it's true. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a older model pay the extra.

I purchased this as a gift for Christmas, quite frankly I am disgusted with the state of my package when it was delivered. It has obviously been opened before I received it as you can see where the seal has been ripped off, the box is ripped in other areas and has holes in it. How am i supposed to give this as a gift.

Excellent machine, but requires pretty frequent rescaling even from minimal use.

While it has a lot of great features, I am not a fan of the fact that it locks that machine and won't let you.use it if you ignore the descaling notification.

So I ordered this to replace my existing coffee machine that has stopped working after five years and lots and lots of use. This new one is exact same model and described as “black” but as you can see on the photo (new one on the left my old one on the right)it it I is clearly grey almost brown ish, very disappointed and will be returning as they grey does not look right in my kitchen, and it also looks much cheaper than my original glossy black one. Think they need to change their colour description.
