Stunning subtitled 'western'
Verified purchase
Superb German-language 'western' which transposes all the tradition revenge/redemption themes from the Wild West to the high Alps of the late 19th century. A stranger rides into an isolated community, dominated by a cruel family, and soon people start to die...
The filming and cinematography are superb: the central performances are so intense we were holding our breath during the brooding silences.
The sparse dialogue is subtitled in English but this doesn't detract at all from the emotion and action.
The Dark Valley oozes with menacing oppression and slow-burn tension. When the killing comes it starts out subtle - don't expect all-action sequences like the recent re-make of the Magnificent Seven. Instead the story progresses through a series of barely-restrained stand-offs. At the end, you have no idea who might survive the bitter winter battle.
Brilliant - but not for everyone.

Enjoyable rework of a classic Western theme
Verified purchase
It has always been said that the classic western genre was, at it's best ( Clint Eastwood,John Ford, Sergio Leone, John Sturges) an interpretation of Greek / Shakespearean tragedy with a smattering of Japanese with the Magnificent Seven being taken from the Seven Samurai.

This film moves that interpretation from the isolated Western town to the isolated Austrian Village and whilst Sam Riley is a little young and demure for the part of vengeful killer the European cast support him well to provide a very enjoyable film.

I actually didn't realise it was in German / subtitled until some English was spoken, so that is praise indeed.

A Fistful of Kroner
Verified purchase
Very good Western-style revenge drama. The first Austrian example I have seen! I would have given it five, but it was very predictable, it being possible to figure out every angle of the plot less than halfway through. Also, why the hell didn't he have a back-up handgun? A six-shooter would have come in handy, and who would come all the way back from the States, with killing in mind, without one - especially seeing as they can chamber the same ammo as the lever-action rifle. Anyway, the good acting, costumes, scenery and great cinematography are let down a bit by a so-so soundtrack, but all-in-all it is a winner - or should that be a wiener?

Unusual almost Cowboy style film !
Verified purchase
A surprisingly good / well filmed, of a 'Cowboy style format spoken in German BUT even with reading English subtitles , which didnt seem to matter or impede the enjoyment , was pretty entertaining and held my interest well. There was certainly beautiful scenery in the area used for the filming !! :)

A good German western

I enjoyed the German take on a western, the background Setting was refreshing and the storyline was engaging. The lead actor, being English did an excellent job and gave good atmosphere along with the other actors.

but the story and its telling are excellent. The attention to detail is almost fastidious

1st Class stuff...

I'll make this brief: every aspect of this film is of the highest standard. It's made its way into my all-time favourites list. It no doubt helps that I haven't read the novel upon which it is based, but the story and its telling are excellent. The attention to detail is almost fastidious, too, and the general coherence of the movie is flawless.

It's a somber piece - and quirky, too - but it's worth the small effort of imagination required to let this film really inhabit its identity, because it just is what it is, and it's wonderful for it.
