Makin' a film while on holiday...
Verified purchase, it seems that while a handful of American, Canadian, British people checked out Eastern Europe [Krakow, Poland] they figured they could make a flick to pass the time. Simple idea: let's get some american independent movie-people to spend some money, get the Polish excited to have Jim C. walkin' around their city and make them believe that now, the Eastern European film industry will be like Hollywood in a minute. Well... it didn't really happen. The film is dark which wouldn't be a problem if it had some concept. It doesn't have any. The story / plot would be OK, as a run-of-the-mill thriller can ever be, of course, even if the cinema buffs notice the ideas being smuggled over from other movies, making it a bit of a mashup. The acting is good, from mostly everybody, really nothing on that. But the rest of the production is dragging. And it is dragging slowly, just to get to a very obvious conclusion; after half an hour one will lose interest in the characters, and won't rally care what happens to them. 61 minutes in, the viewer will wish it just ended. 1 star goes to Jim, I really liked his bit, maybe it was the beard. Star 2 goes for the cinematography and the support actors, collectively. No more stars due, no need for more movies like this, either...

Ill-defined plot and characters

Basically just showing the worst of human depravity, no good characters, and not really telling any kind of story properly. if i had to summarise it would be; crappy policeman gets manipulated into investigating seedy prostitution underworld and creepy author, because of some random murder years ago, and an unclear grudge against new chief of police, whose involvement in the whole thing is no clearer by the end of the film. Crappy policeman does piss-poor job and is corrupted along the way, and all to no avail. the end. if i wasn't putting off sorting my recycling out i would.t have wasted my time, and to be fair i did skim through the last half hour or so because i wanted it done.

Not what I was expecting

OK it did drag a bit but it was a change for Hollywood to invest in a dark brooding eastern European thriller. The storyline did have a few twists, maybe obvious for some but in general once you got used to the pace it was engrossing. I was surprised at Jim Carrie, it's so refreshing to see him actually act and not do his usual typecast nonsense.
I guess a lot of people who like the normal slap bang high octane U.S thrillers will disregard this but us with a longer attention span who love European thrillers with a bit more heart will appreciate the way it is put together..

The plot is meh, the dialogues wooden and actors seem to be bored- but hey, them bills won't pay themselves... For some obscure reason screenwriter decided to base the story in a country he knows f.. all about, which does not help either. "Based on actual events" actually means "we used two facts and spun a 1.5h long story around it"- Bala's story is completely different than this, and I get the inspiration and all that jazz-thing is though, this should not give the creators a license to say their plot is based on a true story when it really isn't.

well I suppose an actor should try different things?

Not one of Jim Carreys best films, but at least he tired something different. It might actualyl have been the producter as honestly they were americans trying to be iron curtain dark, and it didnt work out.
Its not that dark and depressing in Poland, its quite a nice place. I was disappointed iwth the film and only watched it to see how Jim carey dealt with the change of role. Not his finest hour.
The sotry line was poor, and disjointed and disappointing.

Dark and a different Jim Carey
Verified purchase
Normally cannot abide Jim Carey and have never watched one of his usual films to the end. This one I did, his acting was really good. The movie was dark and for a budget film eminently watchable. It was different to the run of the mill hollywood blockbuster. I would be happy to watch it again.

Badly written, incredibly cheap
Verified purchase
Who knew that Poland was so unrelentingly grey or devoid of people. And that's not the worst of this terrible film, not by a long shot. The plotting is vague - let's investigate a murder that wasn't solved. The trouble is, Jim Carrey's character does very little investigating. He turns up at a few places and people tell him things to move the plot along. Yes, he's being played by his superior, but this is so underwritten that you just won't care. Carrey's character then randomly has rough sex with one of the other main characters - completely out of nowhere. And so does the Police Chief. It's trying to show how this character is always a victim, but again, it's so underwritten, that everyone lacks real motivation or empathy. Throw in the turgid cinematography, the shoddy acting, the bizarre accents, the pointless subplots and despite the lashings of kinky sex it's an absolute snoozefest. Oh, and it's so cheap, you'll never have seen a Police Station with so few people in it, or people on the streets.

Jim Carey can act
Verified purchase
I was surprised at this film, I don't normally watch Jim Carey I don't like his manic brand of acting - way too far over the top. He was surprisingly good in this, very intense, and as a portrait artist I love his craggy features. That said
his accent travelled to more baltic states than a Fred Olsen cruise liner! Not Carey's fault - that is for the director to spot and correct. The actual filming was dark not just the storyline - it didn't have to be, and what a pity this was filmed in Krakow and not the very beautiful city of Wroclaw where the true events actually happened. It would just have been so nice to have seen a bit of Polish culture in this - to be honest this could have been anywhere. I did enjoy Carey's performance and would like to see him as a more serious actor but perhaps in something less dark.
