Outnumbered, outgunned, never out of courage - this hard-hitting war thriller is based on an unbelievable true story. With 2,500 battle-hardened Viet Cong soldiers closing in, ammunition running out and casualties mounting, Major Harry Smith (Travis Fimmel) and his company of 108 young and inexperienced Australian and New Zealand soldiers are fighting for their lives in the Battle of Long Tan.

Gave it 3 but I didn't think much of it

It's a true (ish) account of something that happened and it has value because of that
Maybe as a documentary this story could be told better
As a film I didn't think much of it the characters were only vaguely outlined and I wasn't engaged with any of them
What that means as a viewer is that if one of them gets shot etc you couldnt care less you are just wondering how much longer the film has to run
One downside to paying for an individual film as opposed to prime or netflix is that you tend to watch the whole thing even when you are thinking you are wasting an hour more of your life on something of no interest to you
This should have been better than it was as it's a remake of a Mel Gibson movie "we were soldiers"
Ricky Gervais once said "sequels and remakes --- lazy" and that's the case with this film which take the same story and tells it again only worse

Bloody Good Movie.

Based on the Long Tan incident in Vietnam , with the Diggers and the Kiwis , though I expect it was probably more the Aussies .Got themselves into a bit of a pickle with the NVA , and needed to call in for artillery support, hence "Danger Close" , which can be a bit hairy at the best of times. Good action movie and whats more at the end seeing the real fellas involved always brings these true incidents to the fore. The good lady or as the Australians would say "me Sheila enjoyed this war movie" which is praise indeed.

It was ok. Worth the £0.99p

Travis Fimmel was fantastic in Vikings, this however was not one of his finest moments. Some scenes and acting was very good alot was poor. I had not seen a Vietnam war film from ANZAC perspective, This was interesting. Made a change from an American film. Two years ago in New Zealand I met an army vet who served in Vietnam. He said there was a contingency of only 600 Kiwis and he never saw any action at all. The Australians however we're in the thick of it. I have given this 4* because of Travis. For 99p it's worth watchig.

The Battle of Long Tan - finally seeing more than the US side of Vietnam

Having read the book many years ago and being astonished by the ferocity of the action and the typical Anzac good humour when faced with a terrible situation I was really pleased to watch the film. It illustrates perfectly the action by Anzac soldiers when faced by huge numbers of NVA troops in an action that has been all but forgotten in the overwhelming plethora of US-based films about the Vietnam war. I've been fortunate enough to have used the 105mm Pack Howitzers shown in the film and the drills seem very good. I imagine that most of the gun crews were regular Australian troops used as extras in the film, lending an air of authenticity to it. It's a MUST watch!

Great Story, good acting but oh dear who was the Military advisor???

a true account of one of the many times the Australian Forces acquitted themselves in a brave and exemplary manner.

I throughly enjoyed the on screen adaptation of events and there were some fine actors to portray the real life characters. However who was the Military Advisor on the set? a lot of the drama of the situation was lost by not giving the actors better dialogue, rudimentary weapon handling and the faintest wiff of Infantry tactics of the time could have added to the much needed authenticity of the harrowing Contact.

Very brave, "Diggers" all-round.

For those that think only yanks fought in Vetnam, watch this.

This film is good in the respect that it's true, and should be watched especially by the younger generation that have no clue on history that matters. That is, the bloke on the ground who actually does there governments bidding and the results from that, oh and it's not just the bloody yanks that do the fighting.
I'm not a film critic, but yes it could have had more money put into the film, but i assume that was not possible?
But as far as it goes this is very good and well worth watching from all aspects. As an old cavalry soldier from the British Army i can say, i recognize the banter the fear and confusion on contact, This was shown very well in the film.
As far as i can tell, not being that old, the weaponry and equipment used was pretty close if not spot on.
The company commander was to my mind, not the actor i would have chosen, it needed someone ten years older
and with more of an idea on how to play the part better, but he did do a fair job.
But saying that nearly all the other's played their part well, the looks of fear and "what the f... is going on look" came across well i thought, as well as the realization that" sh.. this is it, f... it"
Very good film, watch it.

A truly excellent story about the Vietnam war.

An excellent film about the Australian and NZ army in a mainly forgotten contribution to the fight against communist invasion of South Vietnam. Excellent acting, gritty realism, the hardship of war depicted in detail.
A truly realistic and gripping action packed film start to finish. Deserves to be up there amongst the best war films.

The battle of Long Tan

I saw the documentary for this a couple of years ago. This is the movie of that battle and it is a solid and well acted dramatization of the conflict. It avoids being jingoistic and also avoids any deep introspection of the reasons or morality of the conflict. This is really a soldiers story and leaves the politics at the door. Very good film.
