An insurance agent in 1940 New York is investigating the theft of jewels from New York's social elite completely unaware that he's the thief and has been hypnotised by the real thief, a stage magician calling himself the Jade Scorpion into carrying out the crime. One of Woody Allen's most underrated films which flopped on release back in 2001 but has become a cult hit since. This is like an old fashioned 40's screwball comedy with some excellent dialogue. It's a spoof of Humphrey Bogart films like The Big Sleep and Maltese Falcon with a touch of Cary Grant film His Girl Friday. Excellent performances from Woody Allen in the lead role of the clueless investigator Briggs, Helen Hunt, Dan Aykroyd, and Charlize Theron and this is a very funny gem and throwback to old Hollywood movies.

Golden Age Film Making.

Like his character Gill Pender in Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen has a vein of nostalgia running through his core which comes out to terrific effect in his period films. The Nineteen Twenties and Thirties are Allen's golden ages and they are presented once again in The Curse of The Jade Scorpion. The plot is a homage to early American talkies and involves detectives, robberies, magicians, hypnotism, wise cracks and as always with Allen's films, dames. The latter are exquisitely represented through the fantastic Helen Hunt as Allen/Briggs' nemesis and love interest, and the sumptuous Charlize Theron as the femme fatale and fantasy woman, which Allen often likes to include in his films. Add to this potent mixture the usual highly complimentary music score, and you have a film which is entertaining, beautifully shot and, if you are a Woody Allen fan, another example of why he is one of the best directors ever to get behind a camera (and pen a script and act as well)

Loose plot, dull camera work, negligible characterisation, unfunny script, Woody Allen looking like he was making it up as he went along. Not one of his best.

Great Allen comedy, the loser gets the girl. Good one liners and entertaining, a bit predictable but still enjoyable. Some big names and suitable for all the family. Our copy wasn't in English ( Polish maybe) but the supplier had put great instructions inside the case and really easy to "click " onto.

Great for nostalgia and spoof comedy lovers.

One of my favourite latter Woody Allen movies. Good story and just love the way Woody Allen's character interacts with Helen Hunt's character! Such a laugh and a really enjoyable film.
