This is the sort of film where you think you know what's going on but it has some excellent twists that change the plot direction.

Steve Carell plays Cal Weaver a steady if somewhat boring and insensitive family man who is told by his wife Emily (played by Julianna Moore) that she wants a divorce and that she has slept with a co-worker David (played by Kevin Bacon)

Cal leaves the house and tries unsuccessfully to move on. Jacob (played by Ryan Gosling) observes Cal's failure at attempted pick-ups and decides to take him under his wing. Que awkward situations and coincidences. As a subplot Jacob who is a pick-up artist starts to fall for Hannah (played by Emma Stone)

In general I'm not into Romance type films but the Comedic timing and complications and twists were well crafted and I found this hugely entertaining.

Before you watch this film read the 1 star reviews. Ok now watch the film. The soundtrack is worth five stars. Marisa Tomei is worth Five Stars. The whole film is worth five stars. I loved it. It's not a romantic comedy,( it is funny) it's about how painful love can be, but how you can't give up on the ideal of love, and it's told with great warmth. Everybody involved did a great job, especially the sound people, because I understood every word that was spoken. The only thing that could possibly have improved it is if Julianne had done her Boston
accent ( 30 Rock fan). Beautiful, Gorgeous film.

Difficult to recommend

Well, it's a bit "meh", actually. There are some nice scenes from time to time, but it's all a bit empty. For a film with "love" in its title, there is precious little affection displayed here. MINOR SPOILER - I can't help but feel sorry for Marisa Tomei's character, who gets used and dumped in such a heartless way. Difficult to enjoy and even more difficult to recommend.

I approached with caution as Im not a fan of Carell but I needed something to watch whilst laid in bed poorly. I have to say what a pleasant surprise this turned out to be, the film was funny, touching, poignant and extremely well acted. I loved the interweaving sub plots, Carall's on screen son Robbie played by the talented Jonah Bobo was a marvel to watch and of course topless shots of the younger ahem lead actor is always a treat. I haven't enjoyed a romantic film for quite some time...until now.

Fabulous film showing Carrell at his best. Comedy but not silly

Fabulous film showing Carrell at his best. Comedy but not silly. A modern telling of a "Parenthood" (early eighties movie) type story showcasing the wondrous Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Well written, with depth and a lot of heart and humour, this is a romantic comedy that everyone will enjoy - I wouldn't call it a chick-flick. Warning: there is a scene where involuntary exultations of an impressed, aroused, jealous nature may be expressed, which will be followed by potential embarrassment and giggles. This is normal. Emma Stone reacts the same way on screen.

Loved It

I'd heard a lot about this film before I finally saw it, and I have to say it surpassed expectations. This is one of the great modern Rom Coms......the whole cast is just spot on and the film barely misses a beat all the way through.

If you like smart, funny films that are neither too deep nor too shallow, you would be crazy stupid not to add this to your watch list. See what I did there?
