Nowhere as near as good as Parks and Recreation

I bought this because Amazon said, if you enjoyed Parks and Recreation, you will like Community. I endured 8 episodes, but after that I gave up. Centering around a group of slight misfits or characters in a community college, I laughed at the first 3 episodes, but then it fell into a rut and I was just giving a rueful smirk per episode. Too much the same kind of joke. At times too much schmaltz. Obviously tastes vary, but not for me. So my summary is if you like Parks and Recreation, you won't necessarily like Community.

Comedy 101

Community is a sitcom following 7 misfits and their studies as Greendale Community College - possibly the most dysfunctional college you have ever seen. The group come together to form a study group for their Spanish class which is taught by Senor Chang, the strangest and creepiest teacher you have seen. This first season spans the first year of their time at college and has 25 episodes.

The comedy here is somewhere between Arrested Development and the more mainstream comedy you will find on American TV. It takes a couple of episodes to get used to the style of comedy (the pilot is not the strongest episode). However, the characters are very good. Abed and Troy are a great double act in particular and their credit sequence antics are usually very funny - particularly the rap. Some episodes are absolute genius (the paintball episode is very good, Jack Blacks cameo episode is also a highlight as are the episodes that have set pieces running through them). The extras are good, in particular the study breaks on disk two.

I have rushed through this series in double quick time. It riffs on political correctness very well and has great characters and actors and isn't totally predictable. If you loved Arrested Development then you will enjoy this. However, this is one of the best comedy exports from the US for some time and should be watched.

FUN ALL THE WAY

Greendale Community College is seriously weird (its Spanish teacher Chinese, a yachting class in the car park, instant expulsion from pottery for anybody who mentions "Ghost"). In charge is the bald, rubbery limbed Dean, any scheme he masterminds guaranteed to misfire (not least his Sexually Transmitted Disease Awareness Fair).

Enter Jeff Winger (Joel McHale), ex-lawyer, now seeking qualifications which require the least possible effort. Dismayed, he finds himself heading a study group of misfits. Their relationships evolve hilariously....

Fine scripts, with storylines increasingly frenetic. Great cast, Chevy Chase the most familiar name - he entertainingly obnoxious as lecherous Pierson (any secret confided instantly Twittered).

The 4 disc set is crammed - 25 twenty minute episodes, all with commentaries. An Extras Bonanza includes four sets of outtakes. In a spoof documentary the creator laments cuts to his original women's rest room script, the original now shown with circumstances revealed in a completely new light. Especially enjoyed were the cast appraisals, they invited to assess their colleagues' performance (Chevy declaring it would not be a bad show once they got rid of Joel).

Self-mocking and full of digs at various films and shows ("Dead Poets Society", "Good Will Hunting", "Die Hard", "Glee" - to name but a few). Not everything works, but most of it does (especially when Abed is around).

Sit back, take a deep breath, and relish an exhilarating ride.

I am a big fan of american shows. If you want to know, Seinfeld, Fraser, Curb, South Park etc. British shows too, Green Wing, Fast show, Peep show etc. Many many many. American TV sitcom can be dire, predictable, formulaic. But something is happening now. First we had 30 Rock, absolutely brilliant, Parks and Recreation, and now Community. These are non-formulaic surreal and hilarious shows. If you liked Green Wing, then I think you will love this. It is like Green Wing on steroids. Very fast, surreal, very witty, hilarious, and un-remittingly brave in pushing the frontiers. I'm not talking chuckle-rich, I'm talking people on the train thinking you're nuts because you are laughing so hard. Or maybe they're wondering what it is I am watching. I am watching Community, (or 30 Rock or Parks and Recreation).

If you haven't seen Community then the only reason you can be looking at this is someone else has told you how good it is. Community is that good; its not [[ASIN:B002JIN1KC Arrested Development]] great but it comes closer than any comedy I have seen since.

Community is about a study group; and the 7 members have a wide spread of backgrounds from fresh out of Highschool kids; a conman lawyer that got caught all the way to a wealthy retiree. Each character has flaws and skills and when these are brought together the writers have been able to create some wonderful episodes. The episodes are based around the Study group as they make their way through College; each one themed on a subject. The extraordinarily wide range of subjects on offer in the college allows for an ever changing environment and some out of this world scenarios including in the finale a full out destroy the sets paintball war.

Funniest show you will ever see...

This is the funniest TV show I have ever seen, honestly. I don't think I've ever laughed so much, and every episode seems to get better. You probably think I'm exaggerating...I'm really not. I am completely obsessed with this show and, frankly, its hard not to be when even the worst episode is better than the best episode of any other sitcom on TV...

Basically if you don't buy this then you are seriously missing out, and don't forget to tell everyone you know about this hidden little gem. It shouldn't be kept a secret. I would hate to see a great show like this be ruined just because it isn't getting the audience it deserves.

Was not expecting this too be all that good but I'am now in love with watching this!
This program is really addictive and has many great story lines per episode. The Characters are also really amazing!
The only downside to this though is that each episode only lasts 20 minutes and would be better if it was 40 minutes

When you start watching this you may find it a bit boring and weird but stick with it as you will enjoy it after a few episodes!

Fantastic. Seems like your average American sitcom at first but it's not. The characters are great, the constant film/TV references are brilliant. It is also warm and lovingly affectionate (cheesy!) at times. Not as shiny or mainstream as Friends or Modern Family; not as dark as It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia; not as cynical as 30 Rock or Arrested Development (I have loved/still love all these shows btw). It's clever and geeky and just awesome. Worth watching just for Troy & Abed.
