Really Enjoyed This Film
Verified purchase
I personally really enjoyed this film. I had no idea what it was about before watching it, other than reading the short intro, and was just looking for something to watch one evening. I particularly like the fact that it portrayed the story in a world where, despite being set in the modern day, the vast majority of characters were not back stabbing, self absorbed, malicious, or out to profit from the events that occurred within it, and exploit those involved with them, which is what most of us have come to expect nowadays. It was in effect a very feel good film, which made a very pleasant change, from where the events portrayed could so easily have gone, at every turn. I liked the friendships and relationships depicted, between the two main characters, the two couples, and between the entire town. It seemed like a great place to be, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I totally disagree with the other reviewer who attempted to suggest that this film was not at all moving, because personally I found the exact opposite. I thought it was an interesting little idea, carried out very well. Not everything has to be earth shattering and spectacular, and some things are better for not being so.

Amazon still failing to provide service accessibility for deaf and hard of hearing people
Verified purchase
I'm hearing impaired and I wanted to enjoy this film, having paid the same for the privilege as every other customer. However having let it run for a few minutes it was apparent that there were no captions. I asked Amazon to cancel the purchase and refund the cost, which they promptly did.

I can't believe that Amazon are STILL not meeting the obligations regarding accessibility set out in the Equalities Act. Captions for the deaf and hearing impaired are not an optional add-on, but a baseline standard.

Amazon should be ashamed of itself.

Very enjoyable, low key.

I associate the two main actors in this film, Fichtner and Coates, more with roles as hardmen e.g. Coates in Open Range and both in Black Hawk Down. It was a pleasant surprise, therefore, to see them in a small town domestic setting playing fathers, husbands and maintenance men i.e. ordinary, middle-aged blokes with everyday jobs and everyday concerns.

Ted and Hilde do, however, have a small, if strange, adventure, this adventure taking them through some lovely up-state NY (?) scenery. As well as the rural locations, the town in which this was filmed was also very pretty. As one might expect in a film of this nature, there is a happy ending, the final outcome leaving this viewer at least feeling pleasantly satisfied.

So, for the approach to the subject matter and the locations as well as the film's general ambience, I give it 5 stars.

Family movie for all

A nice family movie, no killing, no shooting,
A nice warm friendly family movie to watch with all ages, about a restless spirit, not scary type of move by the way, something you can watch with the Children & not be scared to switch off the lights at night 😉

Solid performing lesser known film.

This is about the film, not about the absence of subtitles for the hard of hearing (unlike others who give it one star on that basis alone) 👎 ..yes I am hard of hearing, but that should play second fiddle to the actual story, which if you enjoyed, "into the electric mist" you will doubtless enjoy this also.

Two southern university maintenance guys see a man standing (initially) then talking as if to an exhibit within the university campus museum, ...he appears again, giving a little more backstory away, but is typically only visible to them, ..& so somehow is inextricably linked they summise & set out to help him.
This is a simple ghost story of an unfulfilled / restless spirit (in solid form) but a satisfying one, both lead actors are believable in their roles as older guys who have lived in the town all their lives well known within their community, bouncing off each other well as only old friends can.
Low budget, doesn't waste time on unnecessary fx, simply let's good acting weave its magic.
Will likely watch through again.

Gentle and refreshing
Verified purchase
A gently sentimental, rambling, shaggy-dog story which just happens to be a labour of love for writer / director / actor / producer Bill Fitchner.

I wouldn't have looked twice at COLD BROOK were it not for Fitchner, who is one of my fave unsung actors. And his performance is pitch-perfect as a small-town everyman, in this gentle little ghost story. The mystery is just an excuse to exhort feelgood values of home, family and friendship - which kinda makes this the perfect film to watch with mixed generations as there's little which will offend anyone.
It's not, however, a gripping thrill-ride. The plot is pretty obvious, and the story simply meanders through rural life and landscapes. On the plus side, the real-life dialogue is wonderfully dry, and each of the characters is portrayed with genuine depth and breadth. Chip the security guard is especially entertaining, one of a small community's quirky eccentrics who's treated with affectionate tolerance.

The result is a little bit muddled and fairly fluffy - a film where the whole is a lot less than the sum of its parts. But gently refreshing in many ways - free from angst, tension or conflict.
