Hard boiled noir thriller from the Jim Thompson / Walter Hill school..

..but then you know what you're in for if Harvey Keitel is playing the good guy. Stylishly shot by veteran John Irvin, this is full of great actors early in their careers. Keitel's is a brooding, taciturn presence which effortlessly dominates the frame. Dorff is the agent of chaos throwing everything in his way to stop him. Don't expect an action movie; do expect a taut, intelligently written crime movie which drips atmosphere, violence, and a kind of existential desperation characteristic of LA's seedy underbelly. One to watch after dark with the lights off, and sound up.

Deeply unpleasant characters kill each other for material wealth

Nothing to see here, believe me. Just horrible people being horrible. And a professional \robbery where the robbers wear no masks, gloves or anything. We are meant to pity the robbers that die, but what about the people they robbed?
