Brilliant - Not to be missed!

This is a truly brilliant piece of work by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, peppered with humorous one line liners and music from the period. It will resonate with anyone who has found themselves stuck in a rut at some point in their lives.I've shown this film to many of my friends and family and they've all enjoyed it immensely.

A pleasant dose of nostalgia set in the 1970's this film captures the attitudes and mood of the time. Upon leaving school, the majority of young people were expected to follow their parents into dead end and boring jobs in local factories and offices. This film follows the main character 'Freddie' as he aspires to better himself by becoming a top insurance salesman, whilst trying to maintain his integrity. Eventually Freddie realises his chosen path is no different to that of his friends, at which point he decides to take radical action for the time...

The stand out performance for me was from Tom Hughes, whose character Bruce's troubled relationship with his father is insightful and an example of how poor communication can lead to inaccurate assumptions, opinions and judgement. The scenes between the pair were shot with subdued colour saturation, until the moment when Bruce attempts a reconciliation with his father, at which point the colour saturation slowly increases. Very clever....

I initially recorded this film on my Sky box, but like it so much I purchased the DVD. I must have watched this film at least a dozen times or more, and never get tired of it.

I am at a loss to understand why this film has been criticised so harshly by some people. It was never intended to be "The Office or Extras - The Movie". I grew up during the 1970's and the film is a very accurate representation of the time.

Good fun, not intended as serious drama or any great pretence at being one of a kind so I don’t understand the poorer ratings. The Gervais comments about early school years in poorer areas, however, were spot on.

As great lovers of Ricky Gervais, it's not a great shock that we loved this film. It's a fab example of Ricky Gervais' work.

Bluray is of course the better quality and we will always opt for blu ray for any film. This was no exception.

Another great british product from Ricky and Steve

Tom Hughes/The Perfect Rom-Com.

I bought this film because Tom Hughes is in it. Basically.
I got a lot more.

I'm not a massive fan of Gervais, but this film is a wonderfully heart-warming as well as insightful and humorous. It's the best type of rom-com. There is a very sweet romance that runs throughout the film but the friendship of the three leads is equally important. Also important to the film is circumstances in which the characters interact. I felt that the setting of 70s Britain was stylised somewhat, but this works because it helps the viewer to understand the actions of the characters - it essentially becomes another character, exaggerated for effect.

All that said, if you're also buying this film because Tom Hughes is in it, then you won't be disappointed. He is consistently hot throughout.

Well written and acted , as you would expect from Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant. I wasn't gripped by the story line - and you need to be aware that this is not a comedy, there is little humour in it.

I was really surprised as I'm not that keen on Ricky Gervais but this is a good watch. Some great characters - Ralph Fiennes as the toe curlingly obnoxious father, Emily Watson as the downtrodden wife, Tom Hughes as the angry young man and Matthew Goode as the ambitious life insurance salesman that makes his customers 'smell the wreath' to get a sale! I loved the double act of Anne Reid and Ricky Gervais as Mother and son. The central love story is sweet and funny.

Not what I was expecting.

What a great film. I bought this as a gift and sat down with them to watch it, more out of politeness than actually wanting to watch the film. But the 70's film score and the attention to detail for the 1970s grabs you instantly and transports you back to that time. The characters are believeable (we all knew a "snork" growing up) and the film has a really good storyline. Well done Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. I would highly recommend this film.
