Indecent Arousal
Las Vegas may be the proverbial city of sin which comes as no surprise that cinematographer turned film director Gary Graver ensures the 'sin' part of that famous strip is dialled way up to 11 in this, his 1996 soft-core epic that plays like a low rent 'Indecent Proposal' yet with way more silicone and bad acting.

Married couple Sally (Gabriella Hall) and Jed Wills (Tim Abell) are living it large in LA. Jed's an aspiring Hollywood power player on the way up and is days away from receiving his first big pay day for a screenplay he's just sold. Problem is, the studios in the red and decide to cancel his cheque - forcing our handsome hero to put a hold on that million dollar listing. Broke, down on his luck and in serious need of a salary, he allows his friend Chick (Richard Gabai) to convince him that betting on the gee-gees is a clever move and within in no time at all - Jed is even deeper in the doo-doo. Enter stage right the alluring Sherry Landis (Tane McClure) who takes a rather bewildering interest in his plight, promising to cover his bet if he does 'some things on the side for her' which don't include cleaning her windows. Cue a myriad of toned genitalia rubbing against each other for no apparent reason, other than I'm a mucky beggar and have 90 minutes to kill.

Crazy to believe, but besides being the go-to cinematographer for director Fred Olen Ray, Gary Graver was also once a DP for one Orson Welles and a hardcore skin flick director to boot! 'Carnal Risk' (or 'Sexual Roulette' in some quarters) owes more to Gravers' XXX history than it does to the great Welles, but really does highlight the overall weirdness of the film industry. The screenplay by Sean McGinly ('Executive Command' and 'A Woman Scorned 2') is standard softcore guff with a limp plot outline which seems to only exist as an excuse for leads Abell, Hall and McClure to get nasty at the drop of a hat. Granted, the trio are attractive so its an easy sell (Tim Abell stands out with his usual charm one minute, scenery chewing lunacy the very next and is the best actor of the three) and akin to most movies of this ilk, the cast seemingly only appear to exist as perpetually sex crazed creatures - it's like they don't have any other function at all, other than to be horny: Its either horizontal jogging or nuthin'.

Amazon Prime present 'Carnal Risk' with a really cruddy full frame transfer that looks like a VHS rip - although, I'm not sure if it would look any better if it were HD. The movie is cheap and feels the need to keep showing us B-roll footage of Vegas time and time again which I assumed was more to do with padding than a creative impulse. Director Graver is a very talented DP and clearly knows his soft-core bongo onions but the lame screenplay and dull acting derail this one from the beginning, failing to hit the requisite mark that fellow trouser troublers 'A Woman Scorned 2' and 'Masseuse' excel at with ease. Oh well.
