Great film, but there are greater.

Spoiler alert scale: 6/10 (Key info and then some)

Steven Kovak (Matthew Broderick, well known for Ferris Bueller's Day Off), the main character of the film, has "moved away for a while" (AKA broke up) from his girlfriend and buys a new house and decides to book a cable installation. A work-friend recommends to "slip in an extra $50 and he'll give you all of the movie channels for free", so upon the installation, Steven decides to *nervously* ask the slightly mad cable guy known as 'Chip' (Jim Carrey, well known for Dumb and Dumber) to do so, which he accepts and then befriends. Steven soon realises that Chip is a very unstable guy, being brought up as a only-child by a single mother who was out almost every day and loved watching TV (close to addicted). As he starts to enter his social and family life, something bad happens to Steven. Really bad.

There are some HUGE names in this film, including Ben Stiller (well known for Zoolander) who directed this movie and also played a small part within the movie, I mean REALLY small - I wished he acted more in this movie.

Average DVD box, nothing special (sorry collectors).

So, what do I give this film altogether? 7/10. Here's why:

-Massive names
-Great acting and storyline
-A dark comedy that will make you laugh

-All of the main characters have been in better, more funny films. This is not the start into the world of comedy films (I would recommend Zoolander).

this is a dark tale up there with more serious offerings like Man on the Moon and the Truman show

Undeservedly mixed reviews at the time. Critics weren't ready to see Jim Carey cast against type as a less likeable, sometimes VERY sinister character. Instead of celebrating the Machiavellian villainy of Larry the Cable Guy, they saw it as a goof-ball comedy that didn't hit the mark. Really, this is a dark tale up there with more serious offerings like Man on the Moon and the Truman show.If you like laughing at Mathew Broderick
going through hell, then this is a very enjoyable ride. Prophetic and satirical, the blurb on the back does not do this film justice. It is not 'Jim Carey up to his usual rubber faced antics' but a glimpse into someone's tortured psyche. And about the best example of 'stranger danger' you can find.

Matthew Broderick's everyman wishes for some company after separating from his girlfriend, however he gets more than he bargains for when he befriends unhinged cable TV installer 'Larry'.
Jim Carrey is as rubber-faced and clownish as ever, however his acting shows more craft and he imbues Larry with a more sophisticated creepy manic energy than any of his previous characters. Along with the outstanding Truman Show, I rate this movie as Carrey's best, and the scene where he and Broderick attend a dinner party at the ex's parents' house is priceless.
This has Ben Stiller's prints all over it, and shows that he's more than just a goonish actor; his direction fits the story perfectly.

Carrey's funniest performance
Verified purchase
I have not been a fan of Jim Carrey in films like Bruce Almighty or Liar Liar. However, I found him hilarious in this film. He was perfect for the role, and played it very well. It's definitely his best performance in a comedy, and possibly his best performance ever, probably second only to The Truman Show. Highly recommended for comedy fans, whether you normally like Carrey or not.

Jim Carrey at his best

Though I've heard the mix reactions for this film, though for me I loved this film from start to finish and there is not one bad or boring scene in this movie with two great actors who performed really well to make this movie enjoyable e.g. Jim Carrey as the Cable Guy and Matthew Broderick as Steven.

The Cable Guy is a great film and I can watch it everyday and never get tired of seeing it, I recommend it to all Jim Carrey fans
