I agree with Mac - nasty and disgusting (SPOILER ALERT)

Why actors of the standing of Dakota Fanning and Guy Pierce would associate themselves with this nasty, unpleasant film is beyond me. We are well used to the gore and violence between adults or adults and monsters in films these days, but here we are subjected to the villain whipping and then raping his 13 year old daughter, the latter mercifully not seen, and then later he is about to do the same to his granddaughter who looks to be about 6 or 7 years old and we are forced to witness the whipping before she is saved. Not to mention all the other slightly lesser unpleasantness.

In the 80s there was uproar about films such as The Evil Dead, video nasties as they were called, but while stomach churning for the time it was essentially cartoonish violence between adults and creatures. Nowadays, genuinely nasty films such as Brimstone just seem to have slipped into the mainstream. At the end of the day this is an entertainment, a thriller/horror movie, not a serious treatment of these sorts of issues, so there was just no need for it. Waste of a well made well acted film that could have achieved so much more by doing so much less.

Best Dutch Western Ever?
Verified purchase
Actually, I think it's the only one. Anyway, it was obviously a labour of love for the director and that shows in the way it was put together. This is not your simple revenge Western - it is far more complex than that. Beautifully shot and well-written, it is however, not a film for the faint of heart, as it contains scenes that will shock most people. All I can say to them is " life is tough - get over it". This sort of thing goes on all over the world right now. It always has and it always will and it is rare to find a film that shows such brutality without flinching. The dark side of religion, violence against women, people trafficking, the slavery of prostitution, incest, torture and murder all feature, but at its heart it is about the unconditional love of a mother for her child. Because of that, I have to say it is a good film and an uplifting one.

The long, slow road to damnation...

A strong contender for the 'most gruelling movie of the year award', this one.

The poster makes it look like a pretty typical western (and yup, I found it cos I'd just added The Outlaw Josey Wales to our watchlist).
In fact it just happens to be set in the old west - there are no cowboys nor first nations here.
Instead there's a preacher (not a cuddly type like Jesse Custer), played magnificently by Guy Pearce, who is utterly unambiguously appalling. He's convinced that his god has blessed his twisted behaviour, and brutalises the very people he should protect.
It's fearsome, this film. In a s-l-o-w, European kinda way. Not surprising, as it's mainly made by Dutch people.
Interesting to see Jon Snow and the Red Witch turn up, too...

Can Guy Pearce actually make a bad movie?
Not if this one's anything to go by.

Don’t bother viewing this film. It’s disgusting.

This is one of the nastiest films I have viewed on Amazon Prime Video and I gave it only one star simply because the review system won’t allow me to score it a zero. I had expected an ” old fashioned” period Western, but it turned out to be full of gratuitous violence, unnecessary close ups of shootings, knife attacks and strangulation in all their gory detail, prostitution, child abuse, wife humiliation and beating, bloodshed and generally perverse behaviour. It was totally disgusting and made for depressing viewing.

Dakota Fanning and Guy Pearsons performances are excellent. Turn you head away gory

This was very gritty and as explicit as "Games of Thrones", Dakota Fanning and Guy Pearsons performances are excellent.
Turn you head away gory.
Told a realistic tale of extreme community and 'male right', of an era, when women were 'owned' and had very few rights.
Well produced and directed, I can wholly recommend it, for those with the stomach for realistic historic stories .
Do not watch this if you're a 'fluffy bunny' type of person!! Girlies and soap watchers beware! Otherwise, 'gripping' viewing.

Incredible, if at times hard to watch.

The reviews of Brimstone typify it i suppose. Loads of 5 stars and loads of 1 stars. It is a brilliantly shot, and acted and a good storyline. It is the subject matter though which is probably dividing people. It is a film of a certain period in time, and not being a historian, i would not know if it is an accurate depiction of that era. What i do know though is how powerful this film is, yes, hard to watch at times, but totally convincing. The acting by all the cast was in a different league, Pearce and Fanning were awesome. The film lasted close on 2 and a half hours, but at no time did i feel it was dragging. Surely the mark of a great film.

Chillingly Engaging

A friend wouldn't shut up about this and given I love a Western drama with bite settled down to what is a long movie. But it doesn't feel like one. The story is captivating, the acting excellent but at the core of it all is Pierce who gives a tour de force of a perfromance and creates one of the nastiest villains in the history of cinema. Highly recommended and have no idea what the people were watching who gave ratings of 1....just keep away from my stream!

Not a good film. Avoid!

The story is excellent had all the right ingredients but it fail to engage as there are too many implausible scenes, the characters doesnt seem to expand during the film. It is like a horror movie with no timing, it supposed to be gritty but lacks depth Dakota character is flat all the way to the end, Pyers efforts are loss because you don't believe in the movie. His character is not constructed well enough by the director that you understand his evil, you can only see the cliche. so much potential but its just a big disappointment.
