Well executed and character led

Mel Gibson is an A-list film star who fell from grace but that doesn't stop him still being A-list film star. This isn't A-list material but the acting is good by all involved and Gibson still commands the screen now with an added grizzled nature and physical bulk. There's that little twinkle of humour Gibson is so good at giving his character that realism few action stars muster. I miss him in big budget movies but this well executed, if somewhat formulaic little actioneer, is a good watch.

Could have been so much better

A teenage girl who is wrapped up in organised crime reaches out to her estranged father - himself with a chequered past - to go on the run from the mob. However, what could have been a really powerful film about escaping abuse or adult redemption becomes a cliché-ridden chase-and-shoot picture. To be fair, Mel Gibson does as well as he can with the humdrum script, but Erin Moriarty isn't going to trouble the Academy with a shallow performance. The direction doesn't help.

Fabulous hard hitting film

I think this is one of the most realistic rendition of bikers and prison, parole and the sheer lunacy of the human race I have seen for a long time. Mel Gibson who I used to adore then went off him when he went all anti everyone, has to me redeemed himself a little. I enjoyed this film immensely and some of it was supremely uncomfortable to watch. There was a grittiness to it, that only older experienced actors can bring to a role. With the wrinkles comes a sort of wisdom. Mel looked great, reminding me a little of Negan from the Walking Dead (or more accurately Jeffrey Dean Morgan with his Negan beard!) He was believable in his role, the supporting actors weren't pretty boy actors, and even the gang tattoos looked authentic. Apart from that it's a great story, fast paced and unpredictable. I was surprised that the dislike I felt for Gibson after the likes of Braveheart, which was bad enough but the Patriot had me spitting in disbelief that Martin Riggs could be such a dick, dissipated with him in this role. I loved him in the Mad Max films and loved him as Porter in Payback. He suits the rougher roles. The Hollywoodization of Brave heart and the Patriot were like badly fitting pants that didn't suit him at all. Whatever he was angry at at this point in his life, well he seems to have got over it. So if he stands true to the ethics behind Blood Father i.e. anti Nazi's, skin cancer awareness etc. then I will look forward to seeing him in more roles like this. It's a great story of the relationship between a rebellious and misguided daughter and her errant once wild father and how love conquers all without a single bit of saccharin. GREAT STUFF watch it.

A classic exploitation B-movie with Mel Gibson...
Verified purchase gravelly voiced ex-con on a trail of violence against tex-mex narcos and basically anyone who crosses his path. This pulpy little noir thriller come road-movie punches above its weight with deftly written characters (a solid performance by Erin Moriarty as a messed-up 17y-old) and a brooding sense of menace and past surrounding Gibson's character. Richet is no slouch with the lens either: over-saturated desert yellows and clinc of spent cartridges accompany a pacy and efficient flick. Exactly what it says on the tin.

Depth and grit
Verified purchase
Plenty of grit and depth, not just an action film but a comment on dysfunction, the whole subculture in and out of prison and how to get your money clean! Lots of ethnic tension and a good quality watch :-) Lots of Mel's films have a positive subliminal message, this is no exception.

Watchable, but...

Mel Gibson has made some decent films, I've always liked him, even though he can be annoying!
I just don't get why people think this a great film. It's a pretty lame story that limps along with nothing great about it.
Only watched it to see how old Mel is faring, he needs a good film to remind us how good he can still be.
